Thread Rivival Time!

Well, this system that I was having trouble with is going to be replaced by a new system in a few days. The problem is that it's not going to be retired, but merely replacing an even older system. So what I want to know is do you guys have any new ideas on how to fix this? Changing settings in msconfig.exe didn't work.

Well... once you have a new system to play with then you can put the other one on downtime before it's put back into service, and wipe it clean and start again.

When re-installing software be merciless. If you don't think you'll use a program or a function, or just don't know if you ever will, don't install it. Make the system as bare-bones as you can at first.

If you only need Microsoft Word DON'T install all of Office!

It's also a good time to check the hardware inside the case. Make sure all the cards and memory chips are seated properly, are clean, all the power connections are tight,... and again: if you don't use a card anymore (say a dial-up modem now that you are on cable) pull it out!

take note of what Edlib said, that one knows stuff.

I format my PC and start afresh every year, just make sure the first thing you do is install antivirus, firewall and the latest patches before anything else or the moment you go online the computer will die on you.

Just the voice of hard-earned experience. ;)

I've been doing battle with Bill Gates' unholy creations since back before Win 3.1.

I have a lot of scars to show for it... but I've picked up a few things along the way.

:joy:

I have a Linux machine. Running Mandrake 10.Something... Whatever the latest release is... I just don't really know how to really use it yet.

I also use Macs at work.

I still prefer Windows because it's just what I know best,.. plus the shelves loaded with CDs of software and games kinda keep me rooted in it.

Actually, I haven't had a serious problem with Windows for years. The 2 machines I have with XP Pro on them run great. I do spend a lot of time tweaking and doing maintenance, but it only serves to make them run really fast and smooth for machines as old as they are.

And I'm the only person I know who didn't have a hellish time with Windows ME. For 3 years it ran good on my system... better than the install of 98SE that came on the system when I bought it.

ME ran fine for years with me.... UNTIL THE BIG MELTDOWN OF DECEMBER 2004!!

But it had been running for 4 years ok up till that point, and i think my attempts to install XP only software on it finally gave it a complex... :D
