Devilsfanatic
I always wondered to myself, where in the world did George Lucas get the ideas of Jedi's, Sith, the Republic, and the Empire.....then one day it struck me, that maybe the ideas came from the ancient Greek, and Roman civilizations.....I remember learning that the ancient Romans were at first a Republic, that was kind to it's people, and treated them fairly (the Republic in Star Wars), but as they moved to words becoming an empire, they ruled with more of an iron fist, (the galatic empire). Then I get to the Jedi's, the philosophers of the Star Wars universe, in ancient Greece, there were the philosopher kings, who were asked to look into affairs and settle them as they see fit. They were not allowed to get married, or feel any attachments such as love, much like the jedi, and when they disobeyed the will of the philosopher king council, and had children, or fell in love, they were cast out, and lost their place. Im not a Star Wars fan at all (except for KOTOR of course ),so if there is an "official" explanation, I haven't heard it.....but it makes the most sense to me if that's where he got the idea from, and then just mixed it in with Space, and Aliens..... Prime
The oversimplified answer is he intentionally drew form myths and legends. He was also greatly influenced by the serial matinees he watched as a kid (Flash Gordon and the like). Another influence was other films like Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. For a better look into this topic, I suggest watching the extras in the Star Wars DVDs bonus disk. They go into quite a bit of depth there...
