In regards to getting the ring to Mordor easier, why didn't Gandalf take Frodo and the ring on one of those giant birds? No one really paid any attention to them. Fly over the top of Mount Doom, drop it in...

The only explanation I could think of was because they'd have been obvious and could'a been hunted by the evil Nazgul things. But I don't see why they couldn't carry them a bit of the way...

Happy Groundhog Day, by the way, Mr. Rabbit.

Also, this discussion reminds me of something that had bothered me for awhile about the Star Wars universe. The Hutts are a feared species of mafia-style slugs with money and influence and goons all over the galaxy. My question is, how did they get to be in such a position of power to begin with? Granted, once the wealth and influence was acrued, they're a formidable foe, but without their many underlings, I don't see how they could get established. I mean, I'd hate to be the first Hutt setting about trying to coerce anyone.
