Creating new planets

How would I go about creating a new planet, I couldn't really find anything in the tutorials about it. And if I made the planet out of mostly tatooine could I use different textures on it? like make all the sand be snow, and change the lighting and the sky texture and still have tatooine the same.

Check this tutorial: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130451

The dialogue editing section is a bit outdated but for general area editing it is still good.

I tried changing the lighting of Taris with svosh but we got stuck as lighting is part of the area model and we cannot do this yet.

However, you can change the textures. To avoid overriding the existing textures you will have to hex edit (dunno if MDLops can handle this: i did not use the latest versions) the area models, which can be a lot of trouble but it is possible.

Is there some way to open a .mod file? cause it would be really cool cause then I could learn how to make a new module better. and if anyone has any spare time would you want to create a new world with me? I would only need help to get the actual module going, and getting it in the list of planets then I could populate it with stuff and redo some textures.

You can use Kotor tool: just drop the .mod file in your modules folder and you'll find it in ERFs>Modules :)
