gMax troubles...

Mav

Recommended Posts

Hey, so I've been tinkering with some new functions with gmax... lofting.. booleans etc., but when I try to use the "cut" button, under the Edit Geometry dropdown menu on the right, gmax freezes up on me and I have to ctrl + alt + del to get out of it..... anyone know what to do???

What more exactly are you trying to do? I tested doing some cutting in the different editable mesh types of a lightsaber model in gmax and it didn't crash or show any signs of trouble. So if it's a bug in gmax it has to be triggered by something more specific.

Do you have many modifiers in your mesh's stack. I have found that gmax can become unstable if you have too many. OR if you apply one that adds a HUGE poly count increase.

Its best to collapse the modifiers after applying them or if you don't like the effect delete them instead of turning them off.

Oh and will gmax crash if you make a cut on a new mesh?

Well, basically I do the following...

1. Make a box

2. convert it to editble poly (or mesh, both freeze up)

3. then I go into subobject edge and click the "cut button" and try to cut the object and then it freezes.

Thanks T7, apparently either 1. I was doing it wrong before, or the installation got messed up, but it's working now and I'm running through the head tutorial... lol it's fun and HOLY COW that cut tool is very useful.. lol.. well off to work... I'll post a final screen of my tutorialized head model when I'm done... :D

Sorry, if I confused you into getting your hopes up, but that is just one of the tutorials within gmax, I was just going over it to learn some new gmax skills.

Well... now that I am done with my mini-shrek tutorial it's back to modeling my sword and after that I'll take a look at the gun tutorial I downloaded and see what I can do ;)

That was the first tutorial I did for gmax too :). It really makes me wonder why more people don't do those tutorials ;)

I'm going to do some more of those tutorials they're quite fun... I really don't know why I didn't do them before... they're very helpful for getting orientated with gmax.

I actually followed one of svösh's links to a gun modeling tutorial.. are there any nifty tutorials that you've tried and think are helpful? On the FSalpha page I watched the lofting tutorial and I'm talking to him over at the gmax forums, and I'm going to try lofting a sword model versus spline modeling one.. just incase pondering minds want to know ;)

What are the + of doing one that way vs the other? or is there a difference?

Well... I've never tried it that way, but from what I can tell, from my small modeling knowledge... lofting it will allow to create the sword in solid chunk for the most part, instead of making a line spline than an Ngon handle and attaching the two... however.. I haven't tried it yet som I don't know exactly how it will turn out.. unfortunately.... lol... but if I get it to work right than it should look pretty good... hopefully :animelol:
