starmark2k
I asked the question "Will the Galaxy map be turn based or real time?" in the Q&A thread to be asked to the DEVs (if its selected) but i was wondering what you thought it will/should be. Jan Gaarni
Hopefully like with rebellion, where you were able to regulate the speed of the game as you played.
Garbageben
Yeah I hope that the galaxy map is real time, but adjustable in actual speed.

Guest DarthMaulUK
The galaxy map is very much real time. Remember - you cant actually have a ground battle until you have had the space battle - unless theres no space defences, then its straight to ground assault. The galactic map is also pauseable. StealthWar42
Well, the battles will for sure be real-time. But I have an "educated hunch" that the actual Galaxy map that displays the planets will be turn-based, much like the Rome:Total War style, just with defined hyperspace routes and no free-form travelling. Evidence? I watched one of the movies on empireatwar.net and it showed the galaxy map. The person was clicking on different planets and managing them, explaining to observers how you could construct buildings and build certain units. I highly doubt that constructing will be done in real time, as this would force players to hurry up with construction and move right away to attack. If it was real time on the galactic map, enemies would also be able to attack you freely and players might not have the speed needed to decide what to construct before you get attacked. Jan Gaarni
Why would it force people to attack right away? While you are building your forces, and securing your planets, your opponent is doing the exact same thing. If this is hard to understand, think of it as a traditional RTS where you are building your base and building your forces before any attack is happening, just on a much larger scale. I would imagine it will be like Rebellion where you are spending the majority of your time out of combat. EDIT: In fact, I watched one of the gameplay movies I've missed, and it's in realtime. There are Hyperspace routes, but you arn't forced to use them, though it will probably go faster if you do, plus they will probably serve another advantage controlling planets that are linked by hyperspace routes aswell, possibly extra income from the trade going on between them. I wasn't able to catch what he was saying about them, too much noise. I'll have to view it again.
StealthWar42
Well, not attack, I meant defend. If your enemy is attacking you while you're trying to figure out what kind of building you want to construct or what unit you want to build, then you're forced to stop and defend, no longer able to concentrate on what you would like to do. I don't see the sense of putting the galactic map on real time, I hope it's not for sure. It might make the game a test of reflexes and speed rather than a test of strategic thought and intelligence for a lot of players. By the way, what he said about the hyperspace routes is that they just connect to certain planets, some planets go to other ones, some don't. Just said that it would serve a tactical advantage, but he didn't officially connect anything between hyperspace and resources, but it only makes sense that they do. EDIT: just watched the movie again at certain parts and noticed something. The credits are rising up as the person is talking about the map, without pressing any buttons or anything, so it seems to be Real-Time for sure. Jan Gaarni
Yes it's real time. But, combat time and strategic time is not set to the same speed. While days can easily take minutes in strategic mode, in combat mode every minute is either exactly the same as a real life minute, or closer to it than in strategic mode. And, if in the event that the opposing player has managed to coordinate 2 attacks towards 2 locations at the exact same time, then each battle will probably take place respectivelly, and nto at the same time.
