How do you play online

You can play using the awful gamespy arcade tool, which will probably come with the game. Its free to use and probably one of the worst things I have seen since Star Wars Galaxies.

But, thats what is being used. There will be 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 skirmish modes, which can be fought on either land or space, together with a Galactic conquest mode which will only be 1v1. There is no monthly fee, although gamespy do charge a monthly fee IF you decide to subscribe which means you wont get adverts thrown at you during the middle of combat, as has happened to me.

You don't have to use Gamespy. From what I read of the dev chats they said the game features its own online room. Just connect straight from the game and use the games own online room if you don't like gamespy. Personally, I don't have a problem with gamespy but tend to use the online service provided with a game anyway since it's quicker.

Dawn of war has the same useless set up. Its still powered by gamespy and the problems are a real pain. Once the game is up, I might consider setting up a special online tech area because from my own personal and current experiences, we might need it.

I could swear I remember reading somewhere that it was similiar to BF2 or Generals...

Edit- I went back to try to find this quote and its in the xfire Dev chat-

Delphi-PG: Will the server list be based like the steam server list? or will it be like the BF2?

The list will be very similar to BF2/Generals.

This doesn't say whether it will be using a Gamespy backbone or not, and I agree I hope not (btw I'm "Perp" from the DoW strategy guide Nightly Lessons Learned- good game!)
