Kyle Kelasheski
Hello All, I spent several hours compiling & editing various sounds for JA. I'm posting the Read Me below the download link for those of you who are interested in all the details. I had intended on posting this on pcgamemods. com, but for some reason the site is having difficulties reading the size of the file, and it thus won't accept/post it. I intend to post it there as soon as possible though. Until then, consider this file an "exclusive" to the wonderful OJP E community. I hope you like what you hear! Here's the download link: http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=06OM8QF4A39BH3KLUZ7VC73TN7 Yours, Kyle Feb. 20, 2006 ------------------------------------------------------- COMPILER/AUTHOR OF THIS SOUND EFFECTS PACKAGE: Kyle_K_ski WHAT IT DOES: It replaces a number of sounds with a range of effects that are more natural and cinematic sounding than what is found in the game. For example, all of the thin and sharp "swooshing" hand swinging sounds have been replaced with the sounds of clothing being quickly moved. Have you ever ACTUALLY heard punches or kicks thrown that actually produce a thin and sharp "swoosh" noise? That's why I got rid of Raven's default noises, as they don't really occur in Real Life, nor for that matter in any of the Star Wars films. Some of the Force sounds have also been adjusted. Force Push is now the sound effect we heard when Darth Maul pushed Obi-Wan in Episode 1. Force Pull is basically that sound effect reversed. Force Jump now produces a rustling of clothing, and for some reason, the changing of this sound also "disabled" the jumpcharge sound effect. Happily, I don't miss it at all. Force battles now sound more cinematic than before. And just for the record, we've never heard what Force Jump sounds like in any of the films. They just jump with a natural sound, and so the adjustments better reflect what we've heard in the films. The only Force sound effect that's in this .pk3 who's sound has never been established in the films as to what it sounds like is Noforce. I replaced its default "hollow-siren" sound with one of a rapidly beating heartbeat. It seems to fit better, because it's a natural sound that we automatically connect to being pushed to our limits. I replaced the Repeater's sounds with something that sounds significantly more intimidating. It was previously featured in a beta build of ForceMod III, and I decided to include it here if only for posterity's sake. DEVELOPMENT HISTORY: The stated .pk3 file is primarily an assemblage of sound effects that have been collected over the years since the inception of Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast. Since this sound file has been something that I've been creating for personal use over the years it is now impossible for me to state who contributed specific sounds found in this .pk3. I simply don't have the time to comb through literally years' worth of sound effects packages to determine who did what. However, I will still state what I do readily know about the authorship of these files. 1. The Push sound effect is a cleaned up and slightly truncated copy of Darth Maul's Force pushing of Obi-Wan in Episode 1. These edits were done by me. 2. The Pull sound effect was made by reversing Maul's Push effect, signficantly truncating its length, and then having it quickly fade out. These edits were done by me. 3. The Repeater's new sound effects were made by combining numerous sound files from several different commercial games. One of the titles that I can remember using was Call of Duty. These blended sounds were then further modified in a sound editing program. These edits were done by me. 4. Some of the kicking and fist swinging sound effects were derived from Elder Scrolls Three: Morrowind. Melee sounds that did not come from Morrowind were taken from other sound files found in Jedi Academy. 5. Many of the saber sounds came from a .pk3 known as "better_sabers" made by RevanDark. His package also included a saber blade mod that's quite nice to use, and is available here: http://pcgamemods.com/mod/3031.html . HOW TO USE THIS .PK3 If one isn't using a more robust mod that has its own file in the GameData folder, all one needs to do is copy/paste this .pk3 into one's Base folder. If one is using a more robust mod, such as Open Jedi Project Enhanced (a.k.a. "OJP E") then simply copy/paste this .pk3 inside that mod's folder that's found inside the GameData directory. In the case of OJP E, one would put it inside the GameData/ojpenhanced folder. To unistall, simply delete this .pk3 from wherever it was installed. SUMMARY: I believe that the net result of these sound effect changes is one of a more "natural" sounding game. The melee sounds in particular now remind me of the more visceral aural experience that can be found in a game such as F.E.A.R. I don't believe that I've done anything to challenge the integrity of the sounds that we've heard in any of the films. I hope that this sound effects mod heightens your gaming experience. If you'd like to use the melee sounds or Repeater sounds in future releases, please cite me as the compiler/editor of these sounds. razorace
There's my first quick impression: 1. The saber sounds are pretty damn perfect. They sounds just like Maul's saber while being used in single blade sound. Unfortunately, I'm used to using a old school single blade, so hearing Maul's saber sounds just don't sound right coming from my saber. 2. The heart beat sounds a bit grainy or maybe mechanical, I don't really like it. 3. The melee sounds are good, but they are way too loud for the noise they're supposed to be implying. I seriously think they are about the same volume as the saber blades, when they should be much quieter for clothes movement. 4. Like the repeater sound. It does have weight behind it. 5. The Push/Pull samples are pretty good, but I can hear a distinctive thump @ the end of the sound where I know that is Obi hitting the floor. Have you considered sampling from the earlier use of Push/Pull when Maul tosses the junk into the door switch?
Kyle Kelasheski
Razorace, I made a good number of changes to the sound effects per your recommendations. I swapped out the old saber sounds for a different set: ones that are focused on Ep. 4-6, so expect deeper tones and sounds that are less "tinny" than what were made for the Prequels. Frankly, I think that they sound more vicious. Here's the file: http://s60.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=36ZZEJYASMJ6J34445FOPN7I51 Let me know what you think! Yours, Kyle Feb. 22, 2006 Wow, much, much better. Razor, most of these sounds sound just like cloud's sounds, this might be a good alternative since cloud hasn't responded. I do have one problem with this though. I CAN'T STAND SABERBLOCK1 AND 6 SOUNDS! THEY DRIVE ME NUTS!! LOL! They just happen too often and they add too much "PEEEEOOOOOOooooww" I would suggest getting rid of them or substituting one of them so they are not as prevailent. I may do that myself if you don't. Overall, great job!!!
Kyle Kelasheski
JRHockney, Thank you very much for your warm compliments regarding the upgrades to the sounds! How about you zip up some suitable candidates for the saberblock1 and 6 sounds, post the yousendit download link here for your desired replacements, and I can incorporate them into another update for all of us to try. We could then proceed on from there. Please note that I forgot to include Shem's ReadMe for his ClassicSaberSounds. I said in my Read Me at Point 5 that I'd have his write up included in the .zip, but it completely slipped my mind due to my daughter getting her very first cold. I'll definately include it in the next (and hopefully) final release. In his Read Me he's quite generous in sharing his work with others, for as he states, "...From now on, if you use any of my mods, please put my name as the original author...," and of course this is the least anyone can do when incorporating the fruits of others' labors. If it's possible, please include the name of the author(s) of the new saber sounds, so that I can write up a revised Read Me giving credit where it's due. Yeah, I've loved the ClassicSaberSounds for quite some time now. In my opinion, when one compares the Original Trilogy's saber sounds to the Prequels the OT's sounds really do have a lot more "bite" to them. Time to get some sleep, at least until my wee one wakes me up again! Yours, Kyle Feb. 23, 2006 .
JRHockney*
I can't use yousendit because I don't have an account and they've currantly suspended applications. But I will post links to some candidates that you can sift through. After comparing these sounds side by side to the sound mixture I currently use, I think I still might like my mixture a little better; however, many of these sounds of the classicsabersounds mod would go very well with the ones I currantly use. I use a mixture of the following two sound mods: http://www.pcgamemods.com/mod/3909.html These are very impressive and distinctive classic sounds that are also very consistant as well. I use all of them in my mix. These would mix brilliantly with many of the classicsabersound's ....um...sounds. http://jediknight2.filefront.com/file/Movie_Stances_20;37063 the saber sounds that come with this one are great as a stand alone sound mod especially if you like the sounds from espisode 2. However, since we're more into classic sounds, I only use the wallhit sounds from this one for the most part. Its great for the making the saber actually make noise when it sticks in the wall. Maybe you can make a nice stew mixture of the sounds you like since you like to mix sounds. Since you know how to properly cite authors, maybe we don't need cloud's permission after all to use some of his.
Kyle Kelasheski
After following JRHockney's recommendations regarding the two mods he suggested to me, I decided to update my sound effects mod one more time. The latest (and more than likely, last ) version of this mod is 1.3, and which is available for download via this link: http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZB8LRKVGVKDR33WOHYZX8B31X The main difference from the last release is that I folded in a handful of the Movie Stances 2.0's effects. I'm looking forward to any feedback that any of you may have. Enjoy! Kyle Feb. 23, 2006 .
Kyle Kelasheski
If you downloaded v. 1.3 prior to 11:15 PM on Feb. 23, 2006, then you downloaded the version I had NOT intended to post. lol In my hurry to get to bed to get a little extra sleep before my daughter gets me up, I clicked on the wrong zip file. Here's the link to the correct version of the mod: http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZB8LRKVGVKDR33WOHYZX8B31X Just so you know, I edited the above post to have the correct address, so downloading from either post will now get you the intended file. Sorry for any inconvenience! Yours, Kyle Feb. 23, 2006 .
JRHockney*
Wow, much better. Adding in the moviestances2.0 sounds helped alot and ythe fact that you substituted saberblock1 helps keep that annoying sound to a minimum. Its not that bad of a sound if it doesn't happen very often , but I still may substitute saberblock6 (I haven't decided yet). I like the fact that sounds that sound similar to the new saberblock1 are now alot more prevailant. It is definitely the most "classic" sounding yet. Overall, this one might be a keeper and I might even use it as my own deflaut sounds. Razor, this is probably the best option for a deflaut OJP Enhanced saber sound mod yet. You may want to use this in Enhanced 0.0.8 or make a reference link to it in the readme. Heck, I'd say keep it just because Kyle makes his posts all look like business letters!! razorace
I think Lath had a point about not having "official" sound effect changes until we come up with a blade sound selector.
Lathain Valtiel
Exactly. Then you can release OJPized sound packs at your leisure.
Kyle Kelasheski
I really like the idea of allowing players to be able to choose their own saber sounds via a GUI. I'm assuming that they'll have to paste their favorite saber sounds pack into a special folder inside ojpenhanced in order to gain access to each pack's contents? I hope that my sound mod will be the first of its kind to be made available for when this feature is completed. And JRHockney, "thank you" for your kind remarks! It makes all the work worthwhille. Lathain Valtiel
This wll presumably be a Basic feature as well. What I'm envisioning mainly at the moment is a file similar to .sab files being read in, whose purpose is to specify sounds. I'm liking the extension of .sbs (saber blade sounds). Example. Say you have a file named... eh... default.sbs IInside would be something like this: { name "Default" soundDirectory "sound/weapons/saber" } And that's it. Name would tell the menu what name to give the pack. soundDirectory would specify what directory the sounds will be read from. The only problem with something like this is the null.wav file for soundLoop (which isn't in the saber directory), which maybe we should put into the directory above to get something like this to work. If it can be gotten to work.
