Yohein
Activision is reediting LucasArts classics in Spain, and Grim Fandango is one of the selected games! Probably you're not interested on this but I'm quite "proud" (just to give it a name ) that, if I'm not wrong, Spain is the only country where you can find a new, original Grim Fandango. So the game is alive and kicking again! Let's hope LucasArts follows this example, because it's "Classic Store" is now composed by Lego Star Wars, Starfighter, Armed & Dangerous... VampireNaomi
Actually, I am interested in that because it would be cool to play GF in Spanish. If I had a credit card other than Electron, I'd buy the game at once. Thanks for telling us.
Yohein
Once I said I would record samples from the Spanish version of Grim Fandango so you can hear the Spanish voices. I did that with Monkey Island 4, I'll try to do that with Grim.
Yohein
Ok, later but here you are. I'm replaying the game in Spanish and I recorded some samples. If you're interested, I'll record some more for other characters (I'll do it when I reach a good situation with them). Introduction. Mainly, you can hear Manny talking all the time, but Celso appears too, and Eva says his phrase, of course. http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/intro.mp3 Don Copal shouting at Manny after picking up Meche. Of course, the most important character in this scene is Copal, but you can also hear Manny talking, and Domino's phrase (for Domino, I'll record his final scene, for it is the best moment to show the character's voice) http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/copal.mp3 And finally, Salvador Limones talking with Manny, introducing him the LSA (AAP in the Spanish version). http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/salvador.mp3 I would be very interested if you say what do you think of the acting. By the way, for VampireNaomi Nick Virago has Copal's voice in the Spanish version. Of course, the style the actor uses is much different, but you can make an idea before I reach Nick's scene
elbiolin
Well, I don't think that the actors are bad but the problem is that they have to read their lines while the original actors recorded them first and then the artists made the animations and mouth sync. But I don't think they're bad. Anyway, something that it's kind of weird to me is that change from mexican to spanish voices. What accent is that from Salvador Limones? He doesn't seem spanish. Is he southamerican or just performing that kind of voice?
Yohein
No, all the actors are Spanish, the accents are "fake". They introduced this kind of accents in certain characters in order to keep the "mexican" style of the game. In English they could show this by making Manny and other characters say Spanish words, but in the Spanish version this is impossible. Domino, Chepito, Olivia, Salvador and Chowchilla Charlie had this "latin/mexican/argentinian accent" And yes, if you watch the videos you can see the lip sync is worse than the original version, of course, but it still fits very well. I don't think it looks like they're just reading, I think they did a great job and maintained the emotion in the acting.
elbiolin
Can you show us some pixs from box and papers? Is there any design change besides spanish text?
Yohein
No diference. http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1132173564-01.jpg http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1132173390-02.jpg http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1132173564-00.jpg By the way, the translation of that last back cover is quite bad. The new reedition has a much better one.
elbiolin
I don't think it looks like they're just reading, I think they did a great job and maintained the emotion in the acting. Of course they did! I was just pointing some difficulties of redoing the voices since I used to work on animation and many times we had to work with voices recorded earlier. elbiolin
Do you have that mural image on your jewel case?!! Can you make us a good scan of it?
Yohein
I'm sorry. I don't have the original edition, with the mural and jewel case. I bought this new edition, which appeared a few days ago, and it comes in DVD box, with no mural And of course, dubbing is extremely difficult. You have to worry about the acting, of course, but you have to be careful with the lip sync and everything else, while the original actor (I'm talking about animation now) can focus just in acting. Anyway, Grim Fandango Spanish dubbing is considered, by almost everybody who has played the game here, one of the best dubbings ever made in Spain. I remember when I used to read reviews of the game and comments of the users, all of them mentioned that the dubbing was incredible.
elbiolin
Ok! I think the game should be great in spanish. Thanks for the quick replies! Maybe I should ask for that mural in a new thread.
VampireNaomi
I love them in Spanish! I don't understand a word of what they're saying, but hearing the characters speak this language is just cool. Does anyone know if there is a French version of the game?
Yohein
According to DOD, yes there is (in the web there are even some screenshots). I think I'll take screenshots from the Spanish version and send them to that web, so they can include them in the Languages section. If you're interested in hearing a certain character's Spanish voice, tell me Next I'll record Hector, Domino and Lola's death scene (I find this one even better in Spanish). Yohein
Copal is sprouted. http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/hector.mp3 You can here Hector in this file. This is one of my favourites acting in the Spanish version. Domino and Copal talk too, of course.
elbiolin
Did you hear noise while you were recording this clip? Because there is some. By the way, Domino has an argentinian accent. I would like to hear some more. Nice!
Yohein
Argh, that's my fault. While I was recording, I "clicked" a few folders in Windows Explorer to search other files, and that must be the sound you mean. By the way, in this video you can see the bad translation the game has... they translated Hector "pick up" as "pick"
VampireNaomi
Hector sounds really interesting. I like it how all characters have voices different from the English ones, but still sound good. They did nice work at choosing the VAs.
Yohein
This is dedicated to VampireNaomi : Nick Virago. http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/nick.mp3 This one is Lola's death scene. http://dadott.zonadictos.net/files/lola.mp3 And I think these are the last files... because I can't stand the Spanish translation. Now that I have played the English version, the Spanish texts are even worse...
Scorpicus
Hectors voice reminds me of Jabba the Hut
VampireNaomi
Aah, Nick. I really prefer the English voice in this case, but he's not bad in Spanish. What's up with Lola, though? She sounds like an old lady.
Yohein
Mmm, she sounds ok for me. In fact, I find Nick's Spanish voice very similar to the English one
Scorpicus
Nicks voice lacks that nice Irish twang that I'm sure many fan girls *coughs Naomi* like. But Lola's... its more irratating then in the English version! Like a senile old lady whos lost her grandson in the London underground, worked herself into a tearful mess and is now moaning about it to everyone in sight. Scorpicus
It's her whole photo plan, it's just so stupid! I mean how did she really think she was gonna get away with taking it in the first place - was she under the delusion that a camera flash was hard to spot in a darkened room?? Then when she runs out of the casket instead of hiding herself, she hides the photo (WTF??) Surely with all that time she had to lay down the trail of clues she could have found a decent hiding place for herself and simply keep the photo with her? But the thing is, is that she didn't even need to hide- just go and stay somewhere that is surrounded by people. Mannys casino for example, she was even there for a while; Nick couldn't have shot her if people were able to watch! But instead she chooses to go and hide all alone in the lighthouse leaving the key with Lupe - WTF?? Surely she should have taken the key with her and locked the light house door behind her to stop anyone following her? O.K lets say that the whole unthought out plan goes to plan and she manages to get the photo without being sprouted and by some wild stretch of the imagination she manages to get into Maximino's office, what did she expect to do? Say: "hey Max, take a look at this photo, your girlfriend's been cheating on you with your lawyer - want a hug?" Little to say my sympathy to her is limited.
