I had a problem when the Death Star took out Alderaan, then Yavin - but I didnt actually have Red Squadron! Once it took Yavin out - they appeared ready for action. For some odd reason, the Empire cancelled construction of the Death Star shortly after I loaded a save, and never began construction again.
