Princess Artemis
Since I can't model my way out of a paper bag, I was wondering if someone who can could model a pole arm/pike variation that looks like this. Preferably with the yellow blade shiny and not so dark on the inner sides (it's a model from FFVII, waaaay back before they used textures on models). Getting a little fancy with it would be fine so long as it's recognizably that halberd. If possible, I'd like it to be for both K1 and TSL and have stats decent enough to make it useful throughout the game. It is, after all, the best weapon for Cid in FFVII. I don't care about having it available in game, I'm no stranger to KSE and cheating Thanks in advance for anyone who even looks at this and considers it, even if they don't decide to do it. Krimsyn Kane
That's a pretty cool idea but was there supposed to be a picture in there? Wish I could help since modelling my way out of a paper bag would also be a huge challange for me. Good luck, hope somebody makes it for you. Princess Artemis
Yeah, there was supposed to be a pic, dunno why it didn't work (I'll be in a extremely foul mood re: my site if suddenly my pictures on my wepages don't work). I changed the URL so now it goes straight to an image instead of an HTML page. :/
goldberry
The picture's fine. Is that Cid's Ultimate Weapon? I can't rememebr the name.
Princess Artemis
Hee, yeah, it's Venus Gospel, The Coolest Halberd for The Coolest FF Character
goldberry
Cid is cool, but ontopic... The spear will be a bit difficult to use with animations, as there aren't already spears in game.
Princess Artemis
But there are, at least, there are weapons that would work--there are pikes and double vibroblades. Venus Gospel is a two handed weapon, and if it has to be a bit shorter than it should be to fit the game, that's OK. http://www.pcgamemods.com/mod/7588.html has Advent Children weapons, and one of them is Cid's spear from the movie. So there shouldn't be an animation problem. I mean, it's not a spear, it's a halberd with a fairly large butt end that I'm sure could be used to smack people the same way someone would with a bo or quarterstaff. Inyri
I was going to start working on this for you yesterday, but I didn't want to make any solid offers until I got some better graphics software, which I now have. I can't promise it'll get done quick -- I'm going to need to learn to texture with a touchpad . If you want the basic shape of the model tweaked or refined in any way please let me know. Right now I just went with the basic exact shape of the original. Texturing it will take some imagination, I fear. Gotta love vertex shading . Princess Artemis
Oooo!! It's beautiful! Thanks so much for taking up my request The main things I can think of to refine would be the red part--it's hard to see from the pic, but it's a hand guard, sort of a basket, so it would be round, with a trapezoid cross section (however, your variation looks good too, with the white part below it being a handguard instead of a taper down into the red part). Also, the butt end is diamond shaped, or at least, has a diamond cross-section...I mean, it has a top part that meets up with the haft instead of being a cone. Those are the main things. The shape of the blades is really nice, pretty much perfect. I can't tell how thin they are, so I can't comment on that (I always imagined they were thin enough to fit nicely on the very colorful middle), just that the shape is spot on perfect Man, I need to learn to model someday. That really is gorgeous and I can't wait to see it finished (And hee! Auron! Second coolest FF character ever, only beat out by Cid because he's not a dragoon )
Inyri
If you have some form of IM software you can IM me any time you want for more detailed in-progress checkups, otherwise I'll just post now and again with updates for you to approve . I forgot about the diamond at the bottom, but that's very easily fixed. I'll give the hilt section more attention. Most of my attention went to the blade as it's more complicated. For the guard, I misinterpreted the picture, so I can change it if you want. If I did, though, I'd probably make it round unless you prefer it more square. I just assume they made it square because it's a (very) low-poly model. By the way, what I've done so far is very simple. I'm sure with a little practice you could easily learn to make something like this .
Princess Artemis
I have some IM software, I just don't generally post the handles since I'm very easily swamped if I IM more than one person at a time. I'll give you a holler. It's understandable how the pic could be misinterpreted--the software I have that can display (most) FFVII weapon models never could get the long ones to show up correctly. A round handguard would be perfect; I'm sure that's what Square intended, but as you said, the model has a very low poly count. I can see where most of what you did is simple (in theory to me!) because I can see simple shapes in it, but for some reason modeling programs just makes my eyes cross I'm sure I could learn, tho'. Inyri
Thought I'd post an update. Got it in-game with no hassles, just haven't made an icon yet, and as you can see it needs some resizing and I need to position it properly so he's holding it in the right places. I'm also open to suggestions on the skin. I just did a quick one to represent what was actually shown in the game.
Mav
Inyri, if I understand what type of weapon this is, a "halberd" I believe the soldier in your screenie is holding the weapon… backwards/upside down… not sure, my only knowledge of a "halberd" is from Dynasty Warriors
Inyri
It depends on what kind of stance you want to use. There are stances holding the weapon both ways (see here). In the case of the animations in KotOR, I don't know that it matters which way the character is holding it. Princess Artemis can let me know what she prefers though . Princess Artemis
Thanks for the update--sorry I didn't get here sooner. The way he's holding it is, with the exception of hand locations, pretty much the way Cid holds it, so that's fine. I'm not sure it could be made as long as the spear in the mod I linked above (4th screenshot), because of the blades on the sides, but I'd like it as close to that as is feasable for holding it and for not dragging the blades in the ground too much. As for skinning ideas, first, the thin middle part I'd like to have the colors I made for it in my Dragon Library. There should be three showing up on there. The blades I'd like to be a bright gold color, nice and shiny. I know that's a perhaps a little gaudy, but it's important to me that the blades be gold and shiny, withought scratches or blemishes, and the center part be that colorful. The parts of the blade toward the center and inside edge could be a darker gold for variation if it looks too weird being one color of gold. I always imagined the haft to be stained and polished wood, so if there could be some woodgrain on the parts of the haft that aren't the handholds, or the hand guard, that would be cool. The butt end could be woodgrain too, maybe a solider sort of wood--not too bright on the green. The middle bit (the hand holds) and the part leading to the handguard (even if that's not where the characters would end up holding it), I imagine as being a more silver-like metal, so it could have a sheen. I'm not sure about the handguard...just not straight red. Maybe with a little variation in color to suggest use, not sure how to describe that. If it's not possible to give the halberd that much variation in shininess through alpha chanels and .txi, then just having the blades shiny would be fine.
