Hey, everyone! I have been visiting for a long time, and decided to register. Can someone help me to find a good history book on France. I would love to have one that covers France from its birth to current day. Any help would be fantastic.:)

Thanks for the welcome, Jae. I am looking for something very detailed and informative. I guess that would be scholarly. It isn't for a paper. I am starting to learn french in my spare time and possibly in college, and am considering moving to France someday and as such I am trying to immerse myself in the history, culture, and language.

Start with a good basic popular French history book then. They'll give you the basics without bogging you down with scholarly details you might not need to understand the culture (and this is from someone who's majored in both history and French. :) ). Unless you are looking at doing a research paper, the scholarly-only type books are not going to meet your needs as well as the more popular ones.

Try La Belle France might be a good start, as well as

A Concise History of France (Cambridge Concise Histories) by Roger Price

The Course of French History by Pierre Goubert

A Traveller's History Of France (Traveller's Histories Series) by Robert Cole

(all available I believe on Anaxon.com, and likely the local library).

Once you're ready to delve into a specific time period in more depth (say, Louis XIV or the French Revolution), let me know and I'll find the scholarly books for you, and the bibliographies in these books will also give you ideas of other books to read on the subjects. :)
