Can't Get a Union Card

Hello!

This is my first time playing Grim Fandango and I think it's absolutely great! I got the patch, so I'm not erroring out all the time. Thank God.

But, I have a different problem and I hope this is the right place to put it. In the beginning of Year Two, I walked around my spiffy casino and talked with the guy at the table. Got the ticket forger, but now, when I go to try and get him to give me a union card, Manny says, "I got nothing to say to him."

Advise?

nope, why you want to be in the union is because you want to board the Lamancha. If you have any questions on what requirements such as unionmembership, what to bring and such, you should talk to someone important around the docks...and then afterwards you can ask charlie

the union specs being the red book from the jazz cafe, right? I think you can do that with out either the union card or vip pass, so my guess is you STILL haven't checked out the docks.

Check them out, talk to the old sailor working on a boat in the bottle, the one who pulled you out of the water a second time. Get the conversation on the topic about being part of the Lamancha crew, then you were learn why you need the union card and Manny will know who to ask...

As for the VIP, trying to remember how you get it, I think you should be able to get that from Charlie too.

Right...talked to the sailor guy, and I know what I'm supposed to do. I've been told I need to get the VIP card from charlie, but when I go there, Manny just says" I have nothing to say to him." And, I'm stuck. It's almost as if I talked to Charlie at the beginning of the chapter and now I can't talk to him. I really hope I don't have to start the year over...

Did you go to the place where you actually need the VIP? You know, the elevator with the snooty waiter who tells you you need a VIP to enter the high roller's lounge. Did you do that? It's upstairs in the cat race track.

yer too far up mate...you cant go up there...instead go down the stairs and down to the place with the cat race track betting booths...next to one of the booths there should be a door...its a little secret i admit

and when you manage to get into the High Roller's lounge and your on the slide (or background screen) that shows the whole lounge (or as much of it as you could possibly see from any other screen), go to the left in the foreground, where there should be an arched door. There you'll meet me :D

It's not necessary to see this character to beat the game, which is why I managed to totally bypass him when I first played. I only found out about it when my sister was playing and was just wandering around the lounge. I don't know of another charater or scene that is really easy to miss in GF besides this one.

So true, I found out about Max only the third or fourth time I played the game :)

well, I found the room. LOL. Right there, in the open, easy peasy. Dang, I dont see how I missed it!

Anyway, even though Manny knows he's supposed to get the VIP card, he still won't talk to Charlie. And, the bees are in jail...can't find a lawyer. And Manny won't talk with the French Resistant guys. In fact, all conversations with anyone are just repitition.

I'm really wondering if I talked to Charlie way too soon. Some games, like the older ones, really make you do things in sequence. Is that how it is

met Nick yet? In the high roller's lounge or in the jazz cafe?

the beatnicks, right? in the jazz cafe? That dosne't make sense if the bees in jail, because you should have already talked to them to have gotten that red book, right?

I know the feeling, hang in there kid.

a lucas arts game doesn't pull crap where if you don't do something right, you fail the game or fail at never being able to complete it unless you find an earlier saved file. In a lucas arts game, you can always make progress.

Where else haven't you been to in the town, or wish that you could go to? I'll try to think up some more ideas later

okay, you get the vip card because Charlie will wants you to do something for him in the High Roller's lounge. Charlie asks you to do this thing for him after you ask him to make you a fake union card, wihch you will get in exchange for finding what Charlie wants. And you ask for a union card from Charlie after you talked to the sea captain about how to get on the boat, with one of the requirements he tells you being that you need to be part of the union. Now technical errors aside, if you haven't done one of the above, you are not progressing to getting the union card.

Also, you should be able to talk to him a second time, as the first time you just took a ticket maker away from him and didn't have an urge to get on a boat. You should be able to talk to him a second time after realizing from talking to the sea captain (make sure you covered that part of the conversation with the captain) that you need to be in the union.

I just been playing that part of the game myself. When you first talk to Chowchilla Charlie you will get the ticket machine and that is all. After you speak to Dockmaster Velasco about joining the Union then you can talk to Charlie again and he gives you the VIP ticket.

So all you need to do is to talk to Velasco about boarding the ship.

Right. I talked to Charlie and got the machine, then went outside, saw what I thought was Meche and then ended up talking to Velasco (dockmaster). When I went back, I couldn't ask Charlie for the union card so I could run his errand and get into the VIP lounge.

And this is where the glitch occurs, I think. I went back and pretty much started the year over. This time, however, instead of exploring the casino and talking to Charlie, I went outside, saw Meche, talked to Velasco, and then went back and talked to Charlie. And there, I finally could ask him about a union card.

From then on out, it was smooth sailing...no pun intended. It seems like Year Two has the most running around, though I thought I was gonna scream while waiting for the guy in the ocean to walk back around to me...LOL.

Ended up staying up all night. Got to bed around 9:00 am, but I finished. Even with the glitch, it was really one of the most fun games I've played in a while. Any suggestions for other good games?

Thanks for all the help, guys!
