Maxstate
Yay! I've 'ripped' most if not all of the Jedi Outcast singleplayer maps from the JO assets and aside from one or two textures missing in one or two maps, and some maps not allowing you to move after cutscenes, they are in pretty good working condition. I've left bespin_streets on for 8.5 hours last night and it didn't crash. Now I'm willing to zip 'em up in one single pk3 and upload them to filefront or whatever so we can play them at our servers, seeing as how JA maps suck and all. But I have a few questions before I do so: Firstly, who is interested in this? It has everything from NS_streets to doom_comm and other fun nostalgic memories, even kejim and artis. Secondly, what are the legal consequences of doing something like this? IS it even legal? If I have to ask then.... Edit: I'll post screenies in the screenie thread tonight. [Alpha]-0mega-
People also ripped the multiplayer maps (That came with the game), and didn't get persecuted, sued, or w/e. Isn't there any read-me on the jk2 cd or something that states the usual? Like: © 2003 LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC. © 2003 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM or ® as indicated. All rights reserved. Used Under Authorization. LucasArts and the LucasArts logo are registered trademarks of Lucasfilm Ltd. Any use of any of the materials on this site other than for private, non-commercial viewing purposes is strictly prohibited. lol, just opened my jk2 cd-case to see the cd has gone missing. guess I can't check for myself. In any case, usually copyright means that only you are allowed to use it, and if you wish to distribute it you may, but only that copy that you bought (basically re-selling your bought copy). Unless it falls under the fair-use doctrine (US only I believe), though I'm not sure if they have established a ''set of rules'' yet, which makes it quite nasty to determine whether they would approve of distribution or not. See, the big issue here is that many people do things which make them infringe on someone's copyright. But most people that HOLD that copyright, don't care, or don't know. Maxstate
So basically what you said was: "I don't know either, maybe yes, maybe no" ? Don't know how much copyrights are in action here, as you said, there have been rips of the multiplayer maps and even some singleplayer ones that were used in moviebattles II ("made from scratch"). What about the DM copyright act? Anything about this in it? Also, would you please explain the "fair-use" thing to me?
[Alpha]-0mega-
EDIT: Basically yes, they made the maps, they combined it with the other parts of the game, so basically you're not allowed to strip it and distribute it for OJP. You'd have to ask permission from them to distribute those maps (Even though they most probably wouldn't care). The DMCA is for what I've read, more about the protection revolving around copyright holding works, rather than the work itself. (And to protect ISP's from their subscribers' ''crimes'') Fair-Use (america only lol) It's basically a special ''law'' or w/e you wanna call it that you can call upon to basically make you ''not'' infringe copyright because people decided you fall under the fair use act. Depending on how your ''plan'' relates to the four factors given below, you are or are not allowed to use it without getting sued for copyright infringement. 1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; 2. the nature of the copyrighted work; 3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and 4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. ensiform
He's not allowed to distribute it *WITH* OJP no. But if he did it freely nothing would be hurt for OJP's sake. FYI the only person who holds the star wars copyrights is Mr. George Lucas. Not Lucasarts, Raven Software, Activision, etc.

FYI the only person who holds the star wars copyrights is Mr. George Lucas. Not Lucasarts, Raven Software, Activision, etc. Well he can't just distribute .zip's with all the map pk3's ''like that'' can he, as people can then obtain material that had otherwise (supposed to) been paid for? OJP wouldn't be hurt, but he ''would'' (ethically that is, I doubt any legal action will be taken) He ripped pk3's from Jedi Outcast, to use them on his server with other people that DON'T have them, he has to give them to those people, effectively putting copies of copyrighted work available to the public. Now for as far as I know the copyright, unless stated otherwise, "prevents" him from uploading the mappack without permission from the author. (or George Lucas for that matter) If I make a map, and I release it on my own website or w/e, noone else is allowed to put it up on Y mirror unless they have my permission, or unless people deem it fair by ''fair use'', which is going to be a hassle because it has no effect in my country, lol. razorace
IMO, if you're going to do that, you should just create a install script that creates those files from a disk copy of JK2. That way you avoid the copyright issues and you keep the download size very small.
[Alpha]-0mega-
So you mean that he does not give out the .pk3, but a file that (if you own the jk2 cd) extracts them for you? But then people without jk2 can't play (Though I dunno how many JKA people here got jk2, i'm one of them lol)

FYI there are jk2 mappacks already for lots of the MP maps and some SP ones too so I don't think it is a big deal for max to do, just dont put it on filefront cuz i dont know if they will accept it.
