When he sees them folders, he obviously has a samba/CIFS client running, and any NTFS would be entirely useless when you want to access Windows shares.

lolz @ Ray

and no one has had to ever google a solution for linux??

Where did I say so? Google is *the* solution for linux. :)

Every OS has their error reporting service tinkering away in the backgorund
But not by default, because seriously, error reporting services suck it.

and third party apps you can install to enhance it.
Actually, in Linux everything is third party, somehow.

Otherwise, a thumbs up to sexy sabayon. I dont care what the rest of you cape wearing, terminal box loving freaks prefer :D
It's just that Sabayon hits your nerve. Every Linux can be as sexy as the other one. Just use the same desktop, themes, proggies -> et violine! :)

if anyone who has used sabayon or similar >>

1. knows how to get rid of konqueror and use something else for file navigation

Hm, just start something else? Like nautilus? Dolphin? In case you got the Sabayon DVD, you might want to check out GNOME, instead of KDE, too. When you want to change file associations, you can do that in the KDE Control Center. Questions?

2. knows how to tweak network settings to enable windows networking to actually work
Then let's test something: go to console, and become root (type su at the prompt, and then enter your root pw)

then type mount //windowsmachinenamehere/share /mnt -o username=youruser

then enter your password

look in /mnt with some file browser of your choice if you see what's in your Windows share

Come back with bribery and womenfolk :)

[edit]

Oh, in GNOME it does not happen? Then it is a Konqueror thing. You must set a Samba user and pw in the KDE Control Center. :)
