TSL: Model change question

OK, my apologies but I've been trying to figure this out for awhile, and have made little progress. I'll explain why and what I'm trying to do:

 

I'm wondering if I can edit the ModelVariation setting in a UTI file from a mod to point back to the games default model. In short, I'm trying to adapt the USM for my own use on my xbox (I'm working on building a heavily modded version of KOTOR2 just for the xbox) by (gasp) removing all the wonderful models. Is there anyway I can modify the UTI of say...a USM doublesaber to display one of the games basic in-game sabers instead of the USM model? I'm hoping that will give me the stats of the saber, but leave it functional on the XBOX. I've got the USM installed on my PC as well.

 

I'm beginning to think I can't because of the filename conventions, but would really like to know if this is possible or not, or if I'm missing extra steps.

 

I'd also like to say that if this is possible, I have no intention of uploading this mod anywhere without first obtaining the permission of the USM creators. I know this is a very sensitive subject, and I can understand why.
