strange text problem

hi i was just wonderin. i have a problem. when i get the little text messages (i.e. mission updates, subtitles) at hte top of the screen, little bits of the letters are missing and ther are dashes above them. i played it on a laptop so i know it's not the disc. ny1 know how i can fix this problem?
