Modeling help

Okay. I finally caved in and decided to try my hand at modeling. Unfortunately it's not going so well.

Though funny, this screenshot fails to capture how ****ed up the model has become, but if you can imagine those enormous polygons flying spastically all over the screen whilst growing exponentially in size, that might come close.

I'll just bullet-point what I did to achieve this effect:

- extracted the .mdl and .mdx files using Kotor Tool.

- ascii-fied the .mdl using MDLops (animations unchecked, read and write).

- imported it into gmax using the NWmax plugin (geom only).

- made incredibly minor move/rescale alterations to a couple of the vertices using gmax. My hate for this program and its payload of buttons and functions that I could never possibly comprehend burns with the fire of a thousand suns.

- selected the aurora base and exported the edited .mdl (geom only).

- re-wrote the thing using MDLops.

- stuck it all in the override directory and loaded KOTOR.

- gaped in horror.

Above: Atton has no idea how I cluster****ed the model so badly

I've also tried editing a couple of body meshes with similar results. Got no clue where I'm going wrong, and the tutorials I've pored over have left me slack jawed. Anyone want to guide me through this? Kiddy steps? Pretty please?

Yeah, that was an edit of the head model. It's the dangly bits of hair that appear to have transformed into giant mutant polygons, and though you can't see it from the screenshots, the eyeballs and teeth have also detached from the model and are floating somewhere below and to the right of it.

I can't find Taina's Replacer for download anywhere, can you post a link please?

I can't find a link for it either. It looks like it can be requested in this thread:

Edit: So I requested it:D

Since ChAINz sends them by PM, you will need to request it there as well. Good luck with your model!

Okay, new problem. Chainz was nice enough to send me the replacer tool, and aside from an initial exception error which apparently always happens, it goes swimmingly step by step up until I try to do the replacement for the .mdx file, at which point I get an access violation (write of address). Only way to make it go away is to uncheck the vertex that I actually edited (that being the head). Anyone know how to deal with this?

Edit: this just plain does not look like it's going to work. :(

The access violation goes away if I don't actually edit the model (i.e. I can pass it through gmax without touching it and then run it through the replacer without it dying on me), but then it turns into this:

Ah well...

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? What I mean is what are you trying to do to the hair? I re-modeled one of the heads about I dunno 2 or 3 years ago. I do recall having some of these issues. All I can say is be sure you read the directions for Taina's Replacer tool carefully.

I'm not even touching the hair - I'm trying to reshape the face a bit, but that last screenshot was of a model I hadn't edited at all, it was a test run where I'd imported it into and exported it straight out of gmax and then tried to put it through Taina's Replacer.

I'm following the instructions to the absolute letter, it just isn't working; when I edit the model I get an access violation when I try to create the replacement .mdx, and when I don't edit the model, the replacer works, but then the mesh it creates is completely deformed anyway.

Right now I`m having the same problem... doing million of tests (following the head tutorial and using the taina replacer) I get...

1. And exception error, that only "works" if I uncheck the head_g box on the replacer...

2. Using a human head model "pmhc01" and moving some vertex (a Pinocchio test XD) and I get something like the image... half of the head has some nasty vertex flying all over the place...

3. Taking the same model and doing all the process with no changes and i get.... NO HEAD in game.

:wornout:
