OK, so I don't know if everyone has heard of these things but basically, it's like a portable library. You purchase and download books onto this small handheld device, so that you may read them on the go.

I have seriously considered one of these things. Do you guys think it's worth it? After some thought, I came to the conclusion that they kinda deplete the entire purpose of books.

Sounds like a good idea, but I won't be buying one, I prefer real books myself. Not only do they have the book *smell*, but it's easy to look up something when you need to flip back a few pages or so. E-books aren't so convenient with that.

I guess it could be worth it, though, I dunno. Depends on the price of the thingy and the books.

it looks conspicuously like a certain portable music device...

but it seems pretty great.

hopefully apple will stick this capability into ipods, including the ability to access the itunes store without a computer... and bluetooth.

holobooks, anyone?

Definitely not worth it then, I'd rather invest that money in a bookshelf instead. Even a tablet PC could be a better deal than that, IMO.
Admittedly I'm not much of a reader, but I do agree that owning the actual book would be better. The "big deal" with these E-book readers however is their "electronic paper" technology, basically the screen is static, so you don't have that refresh rate of regular screens that makes your eyes hurt after staring at the screen for extended periods of time. Other applications would be reading .pdf files and the like as well.
