Patch 1.0b will not fully load

First I would like to say thanks in advance. My main issue so far is patching. I manually downloaded the 1.0b patch. When I run the patch it loads the files to 100% but after that it just sits. Meaning it just sits there updating the system and never completes the last step. I thought it may just take awhile to update the system but I let the thing sit overnight and nothing. As an FYI I've tried this on a Vista box and an XP box the exact same thing is happening. The config below is for the Vista box. I followed all the Vista directions and the game in fact boots fine it seems. I just can't patch it!!! I searched this to high heaven and others have the issue but not many answers to be found.

Thank you for posting your specs. :) Nice, kick-ass system you've got there. Hope it didn't cost you too much. The only other thing that I would get for it would be one more memory module for triple-channel operation.

Have you tried re-downloading the patch? If not, it could be a corrupted download. Now on the patch file itself, you should right-click on it, select "properties" and set it to XP SP2 compatibility mode and run it as an administrator, just like you did with setup.exe and swkotor.exe when you installed the game.

If you're still having trouble after that, since this is KotOR 1 we're talking about, I believe that its auto-updater still works (unlike KotOR 2's). Go into your game's main folder, right-click on swupdate.exe and set compatibility mode to XP and run it as an administrator and let it update the game for you.

A couple of things: you're going to need to do the Dantooine lag fix for the game to be able to run on that GTX 285:

  • First, figure out where the .ini is installed. Default is "C:\Program Files\Lucasarts\swkotor(2)\swkotor(2).ini". If its not in that location, then your going to have to do some searching around on the hard drive a bit.
  • When you find it, just double-click on the file to open it in Notepad.
  • Scroll down the file until you find the Graphics Options
  • Under the last line ("last line" as in the last line of the list of entries under "Graphics Options", NOT the last line of "swkotor(2).ini), add "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1", without the quotes.
  • Goto File, then Save.

And don't forget to set CPU affinity to CPU 0 every time you launch the game:

After starting the game, press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the task manager. Right-click "Knights of the Old Republic" under the applications list and select "Go to process." Right click on the highlighted process (probably something like kotor.exe) and select "Set Affinity..." In the dialog box that comes up, deselect all but one core. Then return to the game and see what happens ^/_\^

Just remember that you'll need to do this every time you start the game.
