Reccomended New Laptops/Problems with my old Laptop

I'll start out with my old computer.

I was using my HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop lastnight and it just shut off. I figured the battery was dead so I went and plugged it in. when I hit the power button it turned on but stayed on the black screen. the after about a minute of sitting like that it restart, it just kept doing that for about five minutes before I shut it off.

Any ideas?

Now assuming I can't get my old one going what would be a good idea for a new one. preferably under or around $500. And NOT a HP. I was thinking a Toshiba or Asus. I might settle for a Dell

I've never had any problems with my laptop, and it's the first one that I've ever owned, so I'll have to take a guess and say that something has either worked loose or burned out. :p

The only way to find out is to Google your particular model and look for instructions on how to open it up and then try unplugging every component and then plugging it back in.

Lenovo is also a good brand.

Ok so I got bored and tried to boot up my laptop. and it restarted once so I figured nothing had changed, then on the next boot it gave me the HP boot up screen and started windows! I will be running a full diagnostic to try and figure out what happened to it.. I hope it doesn't die on me again. I'll try to let you know what I find out..

Could a mod please change the name of the thread to "HP laptop problems"

Thanks!

EDIT: Alright so my laptop restarted and I'm back to square 1.....
