Jack Jones
Hello all! I recently bought a new computer, a laptop, so I decided to try to get KOTOR working on it. This computer has Vista as the OS. By running the game in compatbility mode it works perfectly, the game runs VERY smoothly. The only problem is... Startup takes about 50 seconds, quitting takes about 40 seconds and saving, loadingg and area transitions take about 120 seconds. To me, this is unplayable. Fiddling with graphics options has no effect whatsoever. If I set all the graphics to the maximum the times stay the same. If I turn all the graphics to the minimum, they stay the same. I find this really strange, since I can run Oblivion, Half Life 2 and other much newer games no sweat. Oh and I also got a dual core processor, but I've tried turning off the other core and using AMD dual core optimizer. They didn't make any change. Also, I wanted to find out wheter my CD was broken, so I loaned another one from a friend of mine, and the results were the same. I've defragmented my drives, changed nearly all options in the Nvidia control panel. No effect. If there's somebody who has experienced the same problem, I'd be glad if you had the solution! EDIT: I downloaded a program that records CPU usage etc. when running another programs. I recieved some interesting results. When saving or loading a game, the CPU usage drops to about 1%, when normally it is around 40% when running this game. this is the log from swconfig SWKotOR] ReportDateTime=13.12.2009 11:30:25 SysInfoVersion=v1.00.60 GameExists=1 GameVersion=v1.00.514058 GameInstallLocation=D:\KOTOR\ [OS] Name=Win9x Version=Windows 9X v6.0 build 6002 Service Pack 2 Service Pack=Service Pack 2 Status=Fail [swapFiles] ?:\pagefile.sys=0 [CPU] CPUCount=1 CPUSpeed=2095 CPUFamily=6 CPUModel=7 CPUStepping=6 CPUVendor=Intel CPUName=Intel® Core2 Duo CPU T8100 @ 2.10GHz Status=Pass [Memory] RAM=2048 Status=Pass [Disk Free Space] C: (NTFS), UNICODE=73.80GB D: (NTFS), UNICODE=195.57GB E: (NTFS), UNICODE=2.92GB Status=Pass [CD-ROMs] DriveLetters=F:\ Drives=Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500 A ATA Device [Video] Video Card Name= Video Memory=2048 Desktop Resolution=0x0x0 DirectX=DirectX (9.0+) (4.09.00.0904) OpenGL Version=2.1.1 OpenGL Vendor=NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL Renderer=GeForce 8600M GS/PCI/SSE2 NVidia Driver=(null) Vid Card Status=Warning Vid Card Driver Status=Fail GL Status=Pass DX Status=Pass [Audio] Sound Card Name=Ensisijainen ääniohjain Status=Pass ;Game Options from swkotor.ini [sound Options] Music Volume=85 Voiceover Volume=85 Sound Effects Volume=85 Movie Volume=100 Force Software=1 EAX=0 Disable Sound=0 Number 3D Voices=16 Number 2D Voices=24 Environment Effects Level=0.60 2D3D Bias=0.50 Environment Effects=1 Environment Effects Nonstreaming=1 Environment Effects Streaming=1 [Game Options] EnableScreenShot=0 Reverse Mouse Buttons=0 Hide InGame GUI=0 Use Small Fonts=1 Keyboard Camera Deceleration=2000.000000 Keyboard Camera Acceleration=500.000000 Keyboard Camera DPS=200.000000 Hide Unequippable=0 Tutorial Popups=1 Subtitles=1 Mini Map=1 Floating Numbers=1 Status Summary=1 Enable Mouse Teleporting To Buttons=1 Mouse Sensitivity=33 Auto Level Up NPCs=0 Mouse Look=0 AutoSave=1 Reverse Minigame YAxis=0 Combat Movement=1 Enable Tooltips=1 Difficulty Level=1 TooltipDelay Sec=1.000000 Memory Access=1 Memory Level=1 Disable Movies=0 [Movies Shown] Movie 0=16 Movie 1=0 Movie 2=0 Movie 3=0 Movie 4=0 Movie 5=0 Movie 6=0 Movie 7=0 Movie 8=0 Movie 9=0 Movie10=0 [Alias] HD0=.\ OVERRIDE=.\Override TEMP=.\Temp MODULES=.\Modules LOGS=.\Logs LOCALVAULT=.\LocalVault DMVAULT=.\DMVault SERVERVAULT=.\ServerVault STREAMMUSIC=.\StreamMusic TEMPCLIENT=.\Tempclient SAVES=.\saves CURRENTGAME=.\currentgame TEXTUREPACKS=.\texturepacks STREAMWAVES=.\StreamWaves [Graphics Options] V-Sync=1 Anisotropy=0 Frame Buffer=0 Anti Aliasing=0 Texture Quality=2 Emitters=1 Grass=0 Soft Shadows=0 Shadows=0 Brightness=57 EnableHardwareMouse=1 FullScreen=1 RefreshRate=60 Width=1024 Height=768 [config] firstrun=
Q
Vista?
Jack Jones
Vista? Yes it is. I'm not totally certain wheter this problem is caused by the OS though. No other game I've played has had these kind of problems. The only things that are affected are area transitions, saving, loading, starting the game, adjusting graphic options in the menu and quitting the game. Q
I'm sorry; you kind of already said that it was Vista in the OP, didn't you? Duh... You're going to want to uninstall the game and then reinstall it according to the instructions in the first 2 posts of this thread. Start by updating DirectX as I instructed in the second post. Then install the game according to Astro's instructions in the first post, and patch the game according to my instructions in the second. Then download the replacement mss32.dll found here and the SecuROM fixed swkotor.exe found here, and put them in the main game folder after either renaming the old ones or moving them elsewhere. Then do the Dantooine lag fix as instructed in EDIT #4 of the second post. Lastly, set CPU affinity according to EDIT #3 of the second post every time you launch the game. You do all of that and the game should run OK. As a matter of fact, it should run quite well since your laptop has an nVidia GPU and not a crappy Intel one.
