Hostrauser
This seems to be a common problem, but all the suggested solutions I've found have not worked. When I start KOTOR 2, it goes past the Lucas Arts and Obsidian logos and semi-loads the main menu: I hear the music, but there's nothing but a black screen. A few seconds later, I get the wonderfully vague "SW:KOTOR2 has encountered a problem and must close." This is on my gaming rig, and I've played KOTOR2 many times on this very PC. I've tried re-installing, updating drivers... nothing works. Any advice? Here's my SWINFO... Hostrauser
XP SP2 As best I've been able to figure out, it has something to do with my NVIDIA drivers... but I've uninstalled them, used drive sweeper, reinstalled them (tried several versions) and that hasn't worked. darthshan
Have you tried installing the patches? You can get them here
Hostrauser
Yep, I've tried original 1.0 and patched 1.0b Same thing with both. When I run Config now it's saying this: [Video] Video Card Name=NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE Video Memory=256 Desktop Resolution=0x0x0 DirectX=DirectX 9.0c (4.09.00.0904) OpenGL Version=2.1.2 OpenGL Vendor=NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL Renderer=GeForce 7300 LE/PCI/SSE2 NVidia Driver=(null) Vid Card Status=Warning Vid Card Driver Status=Fail GL Status=Pass DX Status=Pass But I've install the NVidia and Detonator drivers it asks for (and uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled and reinstalled many times)
Q
The game is too old to properly recognize modern drivers, so you need to ignore the Detonator reference. Try installing up-to-date drivers for your specific card along with the Dantooine lag fix: First, figure out where the .ini is installed. Default is "C:\Program Files\Lucasarts\swkotor(2)\swkotor(2).ini". If its not in that location, then your going to have to do some searching around on the hard drive a bit. When you find it, just double-click on the file to open it in Notepad. Scroll down the file until you find the Graphics Options Under the last line ("last line" as in the last line of the list of entries under "Graphics Options", NOT the last line of "swkotor(2).ini), add "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1", without the quotes. Goto File, then Save.

Hostrauser
I would have SWORN I did that before, but whatever, it worked this time! Thanks! Perhaps I spoke too soon... I can get into the game now, but at the end of the character creation screen (after pressing "play", while trying to load the Peragus intro) the game crashes. Any ideas? Hostrauser
Okay, I finally got it to work with no crashing. For the other XP users on here, here were the exact steps needed for me to get the game to work. 1. Completely uninstall KOTOR 2, delete Lucas Arts directory entirely. 2. Completely uninstall all video drivers. 3. Reboot. 4. Install newest/newish video drivers (for me, it was NVidia 196.21). 5. Reboot. 6. Install KOTOR 2. 7. Install KOTOR 2 patch 1.0b. 8. Edit swkotor2.ini (added the "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" to the Graphics Options section) I had tried all of these individually before, but it was this specific order that finally got everything to work for me. I'm finally playing KOTOR 2 for the first time in years. Hope it helps someone else, too.

Hostrauser
Glad you got it working. And now I'm right back where I started. I try loading the very game I was playing yesterday? Crash to desktop. Try to start a new game? Crash to desktop. I mean, literally 24 hours have passed. Absolutely NOTHING about my computer has been changed. I'm not sure the system has even been rebooted. Bout ready to just give up.
Hostrauser
Hm. On a hunch, I bypassed the launcher and started the game straight from the swkotor2.exe file, and I can play the game again. Oy vey.
