Problems starting a new game.

I have played KOTOR 2 on my old computer before and gotten all the way through the game but it had some glitches and skipped parts of the story and I want to play it again. The disk drive on that computer broke so I cant use it to play but I am now using my Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP. I have the game downloaded and I can start it, but I go to build a custom character and get all the elements the way I like them, hit play and the game goes through the starting video, but after that is always spazez out, goes blank and comes up with an error message. I'm not very technical so I have no clue what to do about this, can someone walk me through.

Thanks!

Oh, so you mean "installed". OK.

Can you do me a favor? Try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2.
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

OK, several things:

Your GPU is an Intel GMA 950, which is very, very weak and will require some tweaking to get the game to work. The game should run on it, but only at minimum settings, and several textures will never look right because that chip has no shaders or hardware transform and lighting built into it.

The first thing that you're going to want to do is to download and install the latest DirectX Redistributable Package available here. Just download the file, extract it to a temporary folder, then go into that folder and run the dxsetup.exe. You can then delete both the temporary folder and the file that you downloaded after installation is complete.

Next, you'll want to visit the Intel website and download and install the latest drivers for your chipset. You might have to download and install the graphics driver separately, but they're often bundled with the chipset drivers. There is a utility on the website that can detect which drivers you need and direct you to them. Once they're installed, you're going to want to open the graphics driver control panel and set the "flipping policy" to "blit" under "3D Options". Here's how to go about it:

How to open the graphics properties window

OpenGL settings guide

Next, go into your game folder (C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR2\) and open "swkotor2.ini" with Notepad. There are several things that you'll need to change in this file, so back it up first. Look under both [Display Options] and [Graphics Options] and make sure that the Width, Height and Fullscreen values are the same (800, 600, 1, respectively) under both headings. Then type "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" (without quotes") as the last line under [Graphics Options]. You can hit Enter to make an extra space between it and the next heading. When you're done making these adjustments, that part of the swkotor2.ini file should end up looking like this:

When you're done making the changes, just save the file and exit. Then open the file again to make sure that the changes that you made are still there.

Lastly, since you have a dual-core CPU, you're going to have set affinity to a single CPU core every time you launch the game. How I do it is to open Task Manager (right-click on the Taskbar at the bottom of Windows' desktop and select "Task Manager") and click on the "Processes" tab. Check the "Show processes for all users" box if it isn't already and then launch the game. Once you get to the game's main menu, hit the Windows key to get back to the desktop and look for the game's executable (swkotor2.exe) in the Task Manager under the "Processes" tab. When you find it, right click on it, select "set affinity" and uncheck every box but "CPU 0". In your case that would mean unchecking "CPU 1", but for a multicore CPU, there would be more cores to deselect. Once you've done that, just hit the game's icon in the Taskbar and you should be good to go. Remember that you'll have to set CPU affinity like this every time you launch the game.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. Good luck. :)
