"SW: KotOR has stopped working"

Hello, I'm having a particularly frustrating problem with kotor. Whenever I attempt to run the game, without even loading a black screen, a window just pops up saying "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has stopped working".

Here are things I've done to try to remedy the issue:

-Installed running setup in Win XP(SP 2) compatibility mode along with running as administrator

-Installing it to c:/Users/Public

-Updated KotOR to the lastest version

-Set swkotor.exe to Win XP(SP 2) compatibility mode and ran as admin

-Replaced mss32.dll with the "fixed" one

-Updated drivers

-Downgraded to the lowest driver version I could find offered for my card

-Upgraded drivers to the newer beta release

-Added the line Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 to the swkotor.ini file

-Installing colinux to install wine and attempt to run it that way(turns out colinux doesn't work on 64 bit as of yet)

-Pleading with divine entities

-using imagecfg to set swkotor.exe to default to a single processing core

-A few other things I can't think of off the top of my head

 

With everything I've tried I haven't even gotten it to load a black screen. It always brings up that error window almost as if that's what swkotor.exe is trying to launch lol.

 

I believe it's worth noting that kotor2 runs near perfectly and I never had any issues with it(besides with setting resolutions and changing AA/AF but I solved those issues easily).

 

I truly am at whit's end right now. I'd really like to be able to play kotor(probably my favorite game of all time) and this is

the only computer available to me. If anyone could shed some positive light on my situation it would be much appreciated.
