Bowen
Ok guys...I have $400 to spend. Should I upgrade to a GF4 4400 or 4600 ( I think the 4400 is just fine though ) or upgrade my system to a Athlon XP 2000+ and an Abit KR7A-133 mobo? I currently have an Athlon 1.33 GHz (T-bird core) and an Iwill KA266-R mobo with a GF3 64 meg card. I was thinking that the smarter move would be to update the proc and mobo and upgrade the vid card later this year.....but the same could be said for the proc and mobo since the AMD ClawHammer will come out at the end of this year but I really don't want to wait until December to upgrade my proc and mobo. jeditsp
i would personally go with a geforce 4 128 mb card. although the new athlons give considerable performance upgrades. the bottleneck will always be in the graphic cards. until processors run tantamount to graphic adapters i would go with upgrading ur graphics. more ram too. you can never go wrong with ram. i believe there is an article pertaining to this in pc gamer. can't remember though. check tom's hardware

Despite the fact that my Iwill KA266-R mobo is not the fastest out there, it will still support up to a Athlon XP 1900+. I had decided to go for the GF4 4600 and get the best out there but I can have my cake and eat it too if I buy the GF4 4400 128 megs of course and keep my mobo and buy an Athlon XP 1900+! Besides....the Athlon 1900+ is only a 1.6 Gig and 2000+ is a 1.67 Gig....big difference eh? I'll be able to do this because I have a friend who is going to buy my Athlon 1.33 GHz and my GF3 64 meg for $130. Don't you think that is a good deal? Even at Pricewatch.com the lowest price listed for a GF3 is $157 and that's probably a generic at that..even though pretty much all GeForce cards now are just basically reference boards. I have a Gainward GF3.
Ham Yoyo
You don't need to upgrade anything. Put that $400 in savings.

pinkpanther718
About the GF4 being too fast for that mobo/cpu, let me say this. My friend has a P3 1 ghz w/512 SDRAM. He just bought the geforce4 4400 and I saw it running. We tried MOHAA and Serious Sam 2, let me say, it tore them both up. I don't see how you could possibly ask for better performance when it flew with max detail on highest resolution for both games. My jaw literally dropped. So I wouldn't say that mobo/cpu you have is too slow for the GF4, however I agree your current rig looks fine to me.

See there is only 67 MHz difference between the 2000+ and the 1900+. Sure I would rather have 2000+ but then I'd have to shell out $125 for a new mobo and about $55 more for an extra 67 MHz! I just don't have the money
Darth Simpson
I wouldn't upgrade at all, if I were you. I've got a T-Bird 1.33 GHz and a Gainward GF3 as well. Buy a console or something... But if you absolutely have to, go for a new mobo and CPU. That's what I would have done at least. The GF4 isn't worth that much if you already have a GF3. Toa Tahu
IMHO you should keep it in savings, since you have state-of-the- art systems.Keep it for later cooler upgrades.
