I'm sure a mod will say this, but given the pre-game frenzied state we are all in at this point, the additional users popping up with ... um ... questions, and the generally extreme load on the servers, turning off things like Avatars and Sigs reduces server load, allows more and faster access for more people, and generally increases the usefulness of these forums. I'm sure a few weeks after the game comes out, when the posts are mainly 'how do you solve this puzzle' or 'I'm stuck on this level' type things, the load will again be reasonable and all the eye-candy will be back.
