Is there *anything* I can do to make the MP work on JKII? (I have 56k)

Just out of curiousity; is it possible for 56k to run the Multiplayer portion of the game at all?

This is what happens to me:

I join a game.

I move around really choppy for 2-3 seconds.

During this time my ping is about 200.

A sign comes up saying "Connection interrupted".

The sign stays up for ever and ever... I can see people running around hacking me to pieces (in slow motion ) while this is happening.

When I check my ping is says 999.

A symbol on the bottom of the screen showing a phone line coming out of the jack appears and flashes.

5 minutes later I either get kicked out of the game for having too much lag, or the game automatically kicks me saying "Lost connect" or something like that.

I soooo wanted to play Multiplayer. But it looks like 56k is supported... Is it possible there's anything I can do? Any settings I can change? I'm getting desperate now :(. And no, I don't want to play bot matches...

Thank you so much for your help.

200 ping sounds normal for 56k connections. It's playable. Connection interrupted means you have incoming phone calls, or your internet connection is dropped, OR, the server is laggy for you. If you are still online [you can tell this by going to play, then join server, then get new list, if the new list appears then that means you are still online] try different servers and jog down the ip of the server that is playable for you. My ping gets over 400 in some servers even with DSL connection.

Let me explain... It's NOT like I get the connection interrupted sign a few times and that's it.

After 2-3 second of ANY game I freeze up and I get the connection interrupted sign for the rest of the game. Also, my ping jumps to 999.

I've tried playing MP two different days, for several hours, on many different servers. The same thing happens on every single one.

I'm sure it isn't a laggy server or an incoming call. Either my internet is just way too slow to play the game, or Raven just forgot all about 56k... Or else (hopefully) I have some settings I can change to make the game playable.

BTW, I can play tribes 2 (with 40+ players) JK1 MotS, Asherson's Call, Anarchy Online, and Unreal Tourniment with little lag. Also, it's defiantly not my computers fault.. it's very high end.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I beg of you all; please help a fellow JKIIer... Multiplayer was half the reason why I got the game, and half of my anticipation was based around playing Multiplayer... I've been waiting for it for years, and when it finally comes my hopes are dashed aside. You must know how it is...

That said, please help a fellow gamer by bestowing appon me your infinite knowledge on how to make JKII work better for 56k.

Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, your my only hope...

im not obi-wan but..

ur conection quality might be your prob, i have a 56k and connect at speeds like 44.0kbps and 45.2kbps and they suck, when i go into servers i also get that problem. if u can find a server that is near to your location or one with less than 4 players or something your ping might get better, if you know someone with a cable and the game ask them to host one your ping should get better other wise you'll be like me, i got used to my 500+ pings and used them to my advantage.

another thing your cables from your comp to the fone jack might be defective and thats causeing it to give you a big ping

sorry if this dosnt help

Same exact problem I have (also a 56k user). I can join and play for 5 seconds or so and then my ping jumps to 999 no matter what's going on. I can't even spectate without getting the connection interrupted message. I also never had any problem with any game until this. Outside of the game my ping to servers is almost never over 200 but in a game it's always 999. I think there is something very wrong with the network code that makes it unplayable without a broadband connection =/

Well.... I guess that's the reason... *sniffle* My internet runs at 26,400 bps... *cries*:(

I guess I'm screwed now... All those years of waiting... :( Atleast I still have Single Player...

Oh well.. I guess I'd better not whine about it, but it's kind of hard not to...

I'm on a 56k as well.

Most of the servers its the same deal. Unplayable on a 56k.

Every once in awhile I find one that is halfway decent and I don't get the connection interrupted msg. But its still laggy.

There's pretty much nothing we can do about it I'm afraid.

Some have said to go into the console and type /rate 3000

But that seems to make no difference for me.

Sux =/

I've been playing on a 56k without much trouble. Its laggy, but playable. I think the netcode is just fine. It may have something to do with your ISP or something like that, but it certainly isn't Raven's fault.

The only time it gets unplayable is right after someone new joins the game.

Raven really did a poor job on the netcode I think... It's a real shame too :(.

The box says 56Kbs min, you have 26.4kbs. Don't blame the netcode because you aren't even willing to get a decent Dialup ISP.

Put yourself in his shoes. I too have the same problem as Silent. 999, Connetion interuppted, im tired of seeing it. The netcode is terrible. The fact is most 56kers connect at 28800bps. Even I do. And It still lags up. My computer is also High End. Silent, My situation is exactly like yours. Raven would be stupid to not care about 56kers. Seeing as though most online games are 56kers. I'm thinking that they will come out with a patch like UT. But...Im not sure. it really sucks. I'm mad I spent 70 bucks for this peice.

28k!!!! 28k!! Your modems are seriously ****ed or your ISP is run out of a garden shed, my ping is anywhere from 150-400 (my fps is crap tho, defragged tho :p). While not as good as HL (ex TFCer) the JK2 netcode isnt that bad imo.

I have a V92 modem and I was also getting these problems yesterday afternoon. In the morning it was fine. What I think is happening is that when the US wakes up (afternoon in the UK) then the server gets busy and the lower bandwidth people then have problems.

The solution sounds simple...get broadband! but, and this is a very BIG "but", that is not so easy. BT is expensive and ADSL only covers a small area of the UK and NTL have the cables layed down and working but they cannot connect any new customers at the moment because of huge debt (not to mention their customer service is crap).

The good news is that the cost of broadband should be coming down soon but you'll have to wait and see.

I've actually found that the biggest problem with broadband is availability.

DSL: If you live more than a couple miles from the main input, you can't get it.

Cable: Sort of the same boat. But more along the lines of the cable companies just don't come out very far.

Satellite: Expensive, and there is a set amount of lag in relay times.

Wireless: Expensive, not available in many places at all.

I live on the outskirts of a small town and I have zero options for broadband.

SOMEONE needs to come out with a GOOD technology that can go ANYWHERE and won't cost you half your month's income.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems, guys. :(

I'm a 56k user as well, and I haven't tried to play online yet. However, when I connect it's usually between 48,000-50,666 bps. How far are you from your exhange, and which ISP are you using? 26,000bps sounds really low, to me. I know some ISPs in the past have capped the connection speeds...and some others use different telephone numbers to connect at different speeds. If you don't use the right number, your automatically limited to a lower speed. Are you sure this isn't part of your problem?

Anyway, I'll give online MP a go a little later and see if I get the same problem. I usually have problems with escalating ping myself, which is one of the reasons I don't play online much.

Anyway, I'll move this over to the Tech Help forum so maybe a tech-head will stumble across it and offer a solution.

UPDATE: Okay, I just had a go online...and my pings on that particular server were between 450-999. Anyway, managed to get between 3-5 frags a game. Even so, I'm not too fond of Jerk-o-vision, so I'll have to try a few other servers to see if I can find one that's more playable. The upshot is...it works. So I think there must be some other problem - possible to do with your telephone line or ISP provider - that is preventing you from even joining a game. :(

I've studied this problem to death over the years because I live way out in the country with no access to broadband. I have had maybe 10-12 different ISP's in the last 5 years and I have never connected faster than 28.8 even though I'm on a 56k modem. So everyone that thinks it's the ISP's problem for low connections is dead wrong. It's not the ISP. It's the quality of the phone line and distance from the nearest switching station. In an effort to cut costs, many phone companies nowadays are using shoddy or cheap copper lines when they either run new or replace old phone lines. The bad news is that these crappy phone lines aren't even able to carry a 56k connection. And the phone company could friggin care less how fast you connect to the internet. I have called BellSouth many times to complain about this and all they do is laugh in my face because thanks to their monopoly, I have no choice but to use their phone lines. Bellsouth only guarantees a 9600kbps connection which is voice quality. Be happy you can even get 28.8.

So the bottom line, I feel your pain guys but there's not a damn thing we can do about it and the problem will only get worse because many of the newer games coming out are optimized for broadband. Games like this with stunning graphics and a lot of information to move, just won't run on the old fashioned phone line very well.

Alright 56K users heres the deal.

JK2 transfers at 4kbps. Not at 56ks can do this. To fix this you need to set this down to a reasonable speed. To do this Hold SHIFT then press the Tlide [~] key. THis brings down the console. Type /rate 2900 or whatever yuo download at. This is in bytes, so if you download at 3kbps, make your rate 3000. This should help to a large degree.

I *do* have a broadband connection, my college's T1. And yet I get the exact same problem! I can load websites perfectly quickly, and play games like Half-Life and Unreal Tournament multiplayer with no problem, but with Quake 3 and, naturally, JK2, I consistently get 999 ping and that "Connection Interrupted" message that hardly ever goes away.

Also, frequently I cannot get the list of servers. It's extremely annoying because I've beaten the single-player campaign and there's nothing more I can do since I can't play multiplayer for some mysterious reason.

I'm in Connecticut, if it matters. Are all the servers out west or what?

I read this one with some interest - and I do not agree that this

is an ISP/"your-modem-sucks" problem at all.

I have a friend on the same ISP as me - except he has a DSL connection, normally we can play multiplayer *very well* over the net - a fave of ours is Red Faction. Perfomance is *great* very little lag, good update. Same with good old Half life and derrivatives.

However, JKII sucks - and in exactle the way described by other modem users here. I connect at over 50kps btw. Now, given that the server is on the same ISP, has broadband (and quick no less, i've used it) this is inexcusable. What's even more idiotic is the muppet who said it's because games have 'complicated graphics' thesedays - utter rubbish! In MP, games only transfer locational information - the engines run locally and render graphical effects themselves (when prompted).

So yes, it's true folks, JKII's netcode is not modem friendly, it does need fixing, and no, the solution is not simply to point the figure at us poor modem users and say "get broadband you loser". This loser would love ******** broadband but lives in the UK where it basically doesn't exist outside major cities.

I'm on cable broadband and I get ok pings. But I have a friend on ADSL who gets this 999ping problem. It's not your 56k modems that's the problem, it's something to do with the game.

He can connect to me (or I to him) but once it tries to load up another map, or once we introduce bots his connection is trashed and he even sometimes has to reboot.

So don't worry about your trusty 56ks. I've scoured the forums and I can't see many solutions. Some people seem to be using the no cd crack for whatever reasons and when they re-install it sorts out the problems but this is mainly to do with a "parse error" that also give a 999 ping.

I'll post any other solutions I can find.

I'm not rubbing it in but MP is great, and I'll look forward to seeing you all online once this is sorted out.

Cheers

Funki
