Server problems?

Retro

Recommended Posts

Today, my a couple friends decided we wanted to just make a server to mess around in, so I started up one, but, no one could find it on the list, each of my friends tried this, and none of the times were we able to find them on the server list, THEN we tried connecting to ip from the console, and that didn't work either.

Is it something obvious we are missing or does anyone know?

Just to make sure, when you setup a dedicated server, make sure to set it to 'internet' mode. There should be an option to change it from the default setting in the 'create server' menu towards the bottom of the screen. Once you setup your server, it should appear on the net.

If you want to play on your own server on the same computer, it's possible. I've done it on mine. However, lately my server crashes after 2 seconds...which is why I'm searching the forums right now. ;) Hope that helps you though.

I dont have an "internet" or "local" in my create server menu. And, is there not a way to create a "listen server"? (listen server is what they are called on half-life) I dont want a dedicated server, I wanted to make the server so me and some friends could mess around on it.

Do you happen to be using a router/firewall? What about firewall software (ZoneAlarm, etc)? If so, you'll need to open up/forward some ports to be able to host a game. You are correct that you probably want a listen server--which allows you to play on the same box without starting up another copy of the game...which would be nuts anyway.

Just as a note though, you can have a "dedicated" listen server. The intent would be not to use that box to play, but also to not have it "advertise" for public players either on a LAN or the net. Either way (dedicated or not), other players must put in the ip address of the server to connect.

I turn my firewall off before trying to make the server.

I dont have another box to host a server on, what the main thing is, is just to be able to mess around with server settings when my buds are on. It's not a necessity, it would just be nice to be able to do.

I'm not using zone alarm, and before when I'd create a server for anything, my network card would make it not work, so all I'd have to do was disable it, well, I DID disabled it, so I have no idea what could be wrong.

thats true .. but i'll tell you what.. my server has NEVER shown on the master..

but the All Seeing eye has picked it up.. I do get traffic from there..

Why?

Well thats up to Raven to figure out.

BTW the only thing high on their list is to count the money their making of this game.. a post patch would be cool but i'm not holding my breath.
