Nivek Ogre
What OS will work the best for a JK2 server? I know it's the Q3 guts so without the Linux support what is everyone using for now? I have been trying it on XP and it's great for me (as I'm only a foot away) but for the clients it seems like lag-city! Or am I missing the whole mark here or what? I don't think its the box as it's pretty healthy, and I have a fast cable so I know it's not that. Any suggestions would be great! Here's a real noob question to go along with this one! Do the settings you pick on a dedicated server affect the "in-game" or are there defaults loaded for the ded server no matter what the box is set to? Also if someone could please upload an example of a server.cfg that isn't a mile and a half long I'd sure be grateful! Thanks in advance!
Soul-Burn
" I know it's the Q3 guts so without the Linux support what is everyone using for now?" w00t do you mean? the dedicated server files are for linux. My server's running linux and a friend of mine got the client to work under linux.
HellfireSK
There are NT and Linux dedicated server ports available now. Conventional wisdom would indicate Linux. I've hosted a myriad of game servers and mods thereof and I can say without hesitation that any *nix is the "best" choice for me. I have no problems running a mixed system depending on the game/mod. For example, the q3a variant of Battle of the Sexes required no small bit of "back-end" work that was much easier to do under 2k. It would have run just fine had I chosen to run it under linux, but in that instance I traded a measure of power and stability for ease of use. With all things, your mileage may vary. -h
Nivek Ogre
" I know it's the Q3 guts so without the Linux support what is everyone using for now?" What I ment by this is that I myself personally am using XP and I don't have Linux and that I myself personally don't have a clue as to how to use it. I'm sure it's great but I can barely use windows.

If you aren't comforatable with the system, it'll make the admin job a lot harder.
Nivek Ogre
Yea I think I will! thanks for the feedback. I was just asking about it cuz seems like most ppl use the Linux for ded servers, although I am not sure what the reason for this is. Is it more stable? give out better ping times? or just the "I gotta see if I can make if work this way" factor? Seems to me that most of the peeps that show up on my XP ded box ping pretty high so I was just trying to help them if there was something I could do on my end...
