Emon
Is it at all possible to play on a dedicated server? Like, play the game on the actual server machine? I didn't think so until this one guy on his dedicated server joined the game (it was on Hyperion's JKII Linux) and was playing with us. I imagine it remained dedicated since we were still playing... I just couldn't understand how is ping was always at 0. Even if your connected via your LAN to your server shouldn't you still have a ping, even if it's a single digit? MatrixCPA
He was probably running two instances of the game on one machine. One as a dedicated server and the other as a client. Hence, zero ping.
Emon
Whoa, how do you do that?
Schizophrenic
Even by running the server and client on the same machine, there's still a few milliseconds of lag caused by processing time. Getting an actual zero ping is impossible, there will always be some lag.
MatrixCPA
Originally posted by Emon Whoa, how do you do that? Just have the dedicated server binary and files in one folder and another folder with the MP game and files in another. Launch the server and then launch the game. As far as the zero ping issue goes, it could have just appeared that way to the server when he checked or it could (remotely) have been that the server op was running a listen server on which he was playing and manually sending heartbeats to the master servers. Thus, player on server which appears dedicated.
