D'akt Sangwar
i was reading a post on here ages ago and sum1 sed they thought the thing about anakin being pushed into lava was just a rumour but i dug this thing out i had from years ago, and under the obi wan kenobi section it says this: "Anakins transition to Darth Vader was dramatic. As obi wan realised that his pupil could be lost to the dark side, he tried to warn him of the dangers. The two of them fought, pupil against teacher, lightsaber against lightsaber. Kenobi was perhaps stronger, but victory was not to be his. He forced Anakin back and back...and the younger man stepped into a fiery pit. he emerged, not as Kenobi's young pupil, Anakin, but as a scarred man, full of hatred for obi wan and the jedi: Darth Vader was created" ps, anyone know how he came up with the name Darth vader?? edit - use the spoiler tag. GreyJedi
Actually, look at the trends of all the other "Darths". Maul - simple english Sidious - as in insidious Tyranus - as in tyrant? I believe Vader probably has more to do with a root word "invade" than anything else.
Jiro Kage
Where did the prefix darth come from though. I can understand it sounds like "dark", but why "darth"?

DarkRage
The Sith is some ancient religion, based on the force. I think Darth means Lord of the Sith or something.

It makes sense that it's a Sith tradition for Sith warriors to change their name to something powerful and evil sounding. DarkAgent
Here is a thought... Darth is probably more of a title than a first name. Like a knight in medievel times were titled "Sir" (Sir Lancelot). I believe Darth is simply a title (or rank perhaps?) which can be attained as a Sith. Cheers D.A.
Jedi_Monk
I think it's an abriviation for Dark Lord of the Sith, i.e. Dark Lord of the Sith. According to the comics, the Sith were an ancient race of people who were conqured by Dark Jedi and subjugated, thus this Dark Jedi became the Dark Lord of the Sith and passed on this title to his apprentice. Even the comics hold that there were only two Dark Lords at a time, the Master and the Apprentice. When the Master died, the Apprentice became the Master by default; or the Apprentice might turn on the Master, destroy him and sieze the title. The latter shows a devotion to the Sith alone and also proves that the Apprentice is stronger, now, than his Master and therefore will be able to keep the order alive for another generation. According to the Episode I novel, Darth Bane was the first Dark Lord, the one who began the rule that there could only be two. However, in an attempt to reconcile the two elements of the Extended Universe, the Essencial Guide to the Star Wars Chronology, it stated that between the Sith War and Bane, the Sith had cast aside the Rule of the Two in favor of creating an army of Sith Lords to crush the Jedi. Unfortunately, this was against the nature of the Sith and they all destroyed themselves except for Bane, with the help of the Jedi. They set off a thought-bomb, trapping their souls and the souls of the Jedi in one place (The Valley of the Jedi). Sith have always tried to seal their souls to an earthly object (Exar Kun tried this with the Massassi Temples), and the Dark Lords before them tried to seal their souls to the grand mauseleums on Korriban. The reason for this is that, if they didn't seal themselves to the world, they would be annhilated because they wouldn't join the Force as a Light Jedi would. So, at once, this thought-bomb did a good thing for them, and made it so the Light Jedi couldn't join the Force (become more powerful than you can possibly imagine). In case you can't tell, the Sith are my favorite part of the extended universe. I've written many fan fictions about them. They're the sorcerors of Star Wars, neither Jedi nor Dark Jedi, but magicians who use the Force to augment their powers. That said, don't trust Obi-Wan's words in the Return of the Jedi novelization. Yes, he says in a battle, Anakin was hurled into a lava pit and this scarred him and made it so he was required to wear the breath-mask. However, in that same scene, Obi-Wan tells Luke that Owen Lars was his brother, and we know for a fact from the Prequels that Obi-Wan and Owen are not related and that Owen really is Luke's uncle, being the son of Claigg Lars, the man Shmi Skywalker marries while Anakin's away at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant So take everything EU with a grain of salt; even the movie novelizations aren't canon. I didn't tell you that, but I do have the Episode I Scrapbook, which says: "For the word Jedi, George Lucas was inspired by the Japanese Jidai Geki, which refers to a drama set in medieval Japan during the time of the samurai."
