Sithxace
the good cutscenes that had like ships and planets, how they do it? I would think it would take a longer time making those. i bet in between 5-10 years the game would look like those. 5 years ago the good cutscenes are in the game now. Schizophrenic
They just use a modelling program, probably the same one they used to make the player models. Maya and 3d Studio aren't just for making game models and cheesy 3d images.
Sithxace
i wish that the rest of the starwars game's cutscenes would be like that, I liked in JK how they used real people for the cutscenes. I thought that was excellent, then i guess that got cheap or lazy and stopped doing it.
StormHammer
I would have preferred CGI for all of JKII's cut scenes, I must admit. I was disappointed with the in-engine stuff. It was miles ahead of MotS, obviously, but the animation was a bit jerky, and the characters just couldn't convey the physical nuances required - a half-smile here, a gleam in the eye there, etc. Using real actors for JK was a good move...and added a great deal of depth to the game that might otherwise have been missing (some cheesy acting aside). When I see the CGI rendering quality of some titles on the market, which handle characters very well, I have to wonder at the decision to go in-engine. Some argue that it helps not to switch out of the game, and is more immersive, but I disagree. When trying to convey the emotion of a love story, especially, it helps a lot if your characters can act. Even using CGI characters some of those scenes would have been hard to pull off, in that respect. Only the superb voice acting helped in that respect. The other thing I noticed about the (brief) CGI cut scenes in Jedi Outcast was the fairly low quality. I only remember a few times in JK's FMV where you got the blocky effect...but in all the CGI scenes of JO it was quite noticeable. This obviously explains the fairly small size of the game compared to some others - because they must have compressed that footage a lot. I can only hope that if they ever plan a sequel that they will take the bold step of returning to real-life characters against CGI backdrops...or at the very least, go the route of full CGI. We have come a long way compared to 5 years ago...but there's still a way to go. From the (extremely grainy) snippets of video showing off the new DOOM engine, we should be taking another giant step closer to achieving the quality of current CGI work - so perhaps in those terms in-engine cut scenes will not be so much of an issue in the future...as long as developers are constantly striving to achieve the same quality of animation (particularly facial and behavioural animation) that can be achieved using CGI.
