Plan9
I just rewatched the trilogy over the last four days, and I was thinking...does anyone have any idea how they made some of the more memorable Star Wars sounds? IE the Lightsaber swoosh, laser blasts, TIE fighter screams, and anything else you can think of. I'm sure there are probably some pretty funny stories as to how these were actually made in the sound studio =P
Skyro
The TIE Fighter's flight sound was made in part by an elephant's 'roar,' I hear.
Mr Tim
Apparently some of the lightsabre sounds were made by waving a microphone around the back of a TV. Chewbacca's 'voice' was adapted from the sound of a bear's roar.
Beckett
Being a sound designer and film composer I remember learning that the Blaster sounds are from a hammer hitting an antenna. And the wind ambience noises were recorded by a sound designer at his cabin during a windy day if memory serves. I dont recall what makes the lightsaber sounds. engineerdude
I heard/read somewhere that the ATAT stepping sounds were from a machine press where they cut metal plates or something like that. Also, Boba Fett's ship was modeled after a street lamp.

Laserschwert
Kenny Baker played R2 in some scenes... well, in all scenes where R2 is shaking or trembling. In fact he also played him in Episode 1... and he played one of the Ewoks in ROTJ, not Wicket, of course... he was played by Warwick Davis. Zigmidge
I never knew about funny odd sounds, but models yes. The tie fighters and parts of other ships were all made of old broken stereos oh hey...first post ^_^
