City Counsil

I hear a lot of talk about where to place a town. But I am thinking more about, well, WHO do you need for it to run smoothly?

Keep in mind that all of these positions are by no means 24/7 jobs, some can be done in a characters 'spare time'.

Firstly, I thing you would need a mayor thingy. That is, a figurehead for the town, who decides (with the help of the population) things like policies and who ultimately calls the shots. In a small town, this can easily be someone who has another position too (i.e, the sheriff/mayor).

And well, I think you need some kind of police officer thing, think of it as a town moderator. Who keeps out the rabble, and propably plans any defence, if the town is under attack

There should also be some kind of city planner, who builds and plans where buildings, defences and such are to be placed, so the town won't look like a haphazard buildings tossed out

Any other ideas? Whats YOUR take on what a town needs to function?

yeah, but it is not Counter-Strike. Games that are as social as these tends to build up quite lifelike situations. I mean, I've known people who has done NOTHING but running a pub. Now, is that less important than having someone running a whole frikkin' town? The "it's only a game" reply is for unexperienced people, who doesn't know the addiction factor of MMORPGS :)

Ok here's how I think it's going to be.

There are going to be some advanced functions in a town, if the town wants it. e.g. taxes, defenses, etc. I think the town can decide if it wants taxes, maybe the taxes would be put into a central account accessible only for town reasons, like putting up defenses or garnishments around the town.

I don't think a sherrif will be needed because once a town is incorporated you would probably need permission from the town residents to build there, and keeping with the open nature of this game, you can't really keep a individual out. That would make it not a town but a fortress, and as the faq has said there will be forts or bases whatever you want to call them that a faction will attack and try to take over. Towns won't have that, but I do think they can declare themselves loyal to a faction, which makes them a target for the other factions.

Some towns that remain neutral I believe won't need any sort of defense, being that they are neutral.

Perhaps each planets government will consist of representatives from various towns. Perhaps there are unforeseen duties for politicians.

Who knows, but I do think having a town that you can call your own and not just a prebuilt place will be pretty cool.

If u want to build a town make sure u have a lot of people that will invest in it. At least a 100 people if u want to keep the town active.

A 100 people? that's going to be a bit hard in the beginning methinks. But we should have someone to act as the towns mayor, and not much else. There should be boards where the inhabitants can give their opinion on certain decisions, but the ultimate decision is for the mayor. And we need to have elections to vote someone mayor for a short period of time (2 months or so). This maybe sounds as alot of power for one man, but we cant discuss everything in a commitee, and if u don't like his decisions- don't elect him!

The mayor should ideally be someone who:

- Is in the town much

- Is online much

- Is democratic

- Has good people and communication skills

Unlike me, becuz as a trader I'll be away alot

Whos wants the title and who qualifies?

That's tue...and a council can be just as bad. Have one guy that is always on and the rest are rarely, or a group that is just basically rarely on and the whole thing falls to shambles.. We'll probably need a one-man party thing, and if he leads poorly we run him out. If he won't leave, then we hunt him down. Or her. =)

Heck, it tends not to work in real life. But that's for different reasons.

I think a council could work, but it has to be set up properly. One possibility would be to elect more members to the council than you need. Then set a lower number as the quorum that is required for them to make official decisions.

Of course this stuff is kind of speculative on exactly what day to day decisions have to be made for the running of the player cities.

If, personally, would love it if some sort of politics is involved in the running of a town. Hell, there could even be mayor-ish missions, that would force you to direct your townsmembers to deal with the problems accordingly, or make fast decisions that would affect your whole town.
