bugkill
i just saw epII for the second time (which is better the second time around) and i had to wonder, what are so many "critics" and "fans" of the OT griping about? this movie is a lot of fun and it has great action. ok, the love story is a bit contrived, but it really was not a big part of the movie (time wise). i get really tired of having this movie be compared to the first trilogy, people need to get over the fact that solo, luke, leia, and lando are not in this trilogy. noone can duplicate those movies and i'm glad that lucas is not trying to replicate it (even though epII has several elements of esb in it). when i go see a sequel or prequel of a movie series, i don't sit there and think of the movies before it. epII is, by far, one of the best star wars films (up there with esb) and if it is not (in your opinion), it still is a good sci-fi film at the least. i liked all of the star wars films and just because one is not better than the other, does not change the fact that i still liked the movie. i read peoples' hang-ups about the film and they just keep bringing up the past films (that they claim they love soooo much) and how much better they were, but since this one is not as good as those, it just plain sucks. news flash!!! AOTC is not ANH, ESB, or ROTJ!!! those titles are on vhs and not in theaters now, you are going to see a different film. the arguments about the dialogue and the love story, are really hypocritical. how can you love ANH, ESB, and RTOJ, when the dialogue in those films are just about the same in this film (with the exception of solo's character, which was hip and cool). also, the acting in star wars films (or any other sci-fi film for that matter) are not designed to be works of drama. it is supposed to take a back seat to the special effects, it is used as a back drop in telling a story. the acting in this film is not horrible, it did it's job. i understood every message that the character was getting out and in a star wars film, that is all i need from an acting point of view (hayden handled the anakin part just fine and he made me feel the rage inside of his character when his mother died, that was the only "true" dramatic element that mattered in this film). this film is telling a the story before the first three and i look at this film from a fresh point of view. if more people look at these films (epI,II) as something new and not go in the theater expecting it to remind them of how they felt in 77', 80', and 83', they will enjoy the film more. imo, you are not a "real" fan of the series if you did not enjoy this film, i find it hard to believe that a fan could not like this film. as far as the "critics" are concerned, they have their own agendas and they seem to have a problem with knowing how to review films in different genres. they just seem to group them all together and critique them in the same manner. could you imagine watching a stars wars movie and have to critique as if you are watching "american beauty" (which was an awesome dramatic film)? it just does not work. so, if you gonna talk about epII, talk about it in the frame of it being a fantasy/adventure/sci-fi film and please leave the OT out of it and stop applying dramatic acting standards where human performances are not the single driving force for a sci-fi/fantasy film. do that and you just might enjoy a film that is really good in what it is designed to present, sci-fi action and adventure. The Rocket Man
I agree 100 % AotC IS a much superior movie to TPM, and can really keep up with the original trilogy. Goerge Lucas, well done. PS I even found the c-3po jokes funny! Last time I laughed with a Star Wars joke must have been when Chewie said something. But then I always laugh when Chewie says something. bugkill
thirdgen, this is why lucas is a master in making sci-fi/fantasy films. he chopped up the love story and intermingled obi-wan's investigation of the clones and jango fett, it was a brillant idea and it kept you interested in a "star wars" movie. you don't go see star wars for love stories and drama, they are backdrops to the special effects and they only convey the story. nobody talks about the "kiss" (not even when leia kisses solo) or how great the acting was. no, it is all about the star destroyers, the slave one, the clones, saber duels, droids, alien species, and of course the dark side vs. the jedi knights. all that other stuff is second and not entirely important, so don't try and evaluate star wars films as character driven and full of drama. Ryback
I get annoyed with critics and/or movies that expect the viewer to make concessions in order to enjoy the film. Don't compare this film to any other Star Wars film, ignore the wooden acting, pretend like Portman and Christensen are actually falling in love. Sure, by the end there's tons and tons of action, but when so much of the film is given over to scenes that are just bad, how can you not comment on them? bugkill
ryback, i got an easy comment for you and it is that the acting is not all that wooden in this film. i went to see star wars, not "a beautiful mind". anyone who tries to sink this movie over the romance part, had no business going to this movie. it is called "attack of the clones", not "attack of anakin's lust"!!! i would agree with you if this was the main emphasis of the film, but it was'nt. i would have been bored out of my mind if gl took out the chase through coruscant, obi-wan investigation of the clones, obi vs. jango 1 (at the water planet), obi vs. jango 2 (in space), obi finds dooku, obi gets captured, anakin rapes and pillages tusken village, anakin and padme go through the mechanical maze looking for obi, they get captured, then they fight three beasts in a arena, the jedi knights show up, big fight with jedi knights and droid army, mace takes off jango's head, then the clones attack, big ass war, anakin and obi get's their asses whooped by dooku, and finally yoda whips out the stick and becomes "yoda maul"!!! yes, if lucas would have taken out all of this and replace them with padme and anakin acting like jilted lovers in a galaxy far, far away, then i would understand your gripe, but it did not happen that way. their acting was not horrible for a film like this, they did not have to carry this movie. i took their scenes for what it was and i left it as that, a classic and cliched romance (that is used in most, if not all action/adventure films) that is not the main reason for watching this movie. man, people need to really lighten up and just enjoy the movie for it's action scenes and visuals, but you can also enjoy the romance part, just as long if you look at in the context of it being in an action/adventure movie. Jedi_Monk
Personally, I thought the acting was excellent. Christensen has very expressive eyes. I also liked the love-story, even though the timeframe was kind of vague--but if you look at Star Wars as a morality play, it all makes sense. Caldera
Ok for all you idiots out there, think abou this: - anakin traines 24/7 for 10 years - anakin does not meet any girls he is interested in - he probably does not talk to girls because he is shy - he is always thinking of padme - he has never had a love conversation with a girl - he does not have a mother he can talk to about girls What do you expect him to day????? Jesus...you guys should use your heads. Im sure he couldnt have gone to the Jedi Library and picked up "Dating for Dummies". Smarten up.
Ferox
im not a critic, nor am i a HUGE fan of star wars but i do enjoy the movies and games. i dont go into star wars movies or many other movies with much expectations... i LOVED ep2 .. infact its my favorite of all the star wars movies, it was on such a broad scope that you really got to see a lot of the world the movie is about and what goes on it in, in contrast to the rather static and homey movies before hand where you might of seeing 2 places/parts of the movie. Frizbee
As Lucas himself says, he is making these movies for 12 and 13 year olds, not for adults. He doesn't care that people saw episode one and went "I hate Jar Jar Binks" He says the movies are purely for entertainment. Therefore, to those who love the movie, Good for you. For those who don't, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it...... I just can't believe that some morons have tried starting a petition to have George Lucas removed as the director for episode 3... like AS IF that would ever work.
