Tyto
Hi all, first off let me say I love SW. Everything about it, probably more than is good for me. Bearing that in mind, I'm amazed that I have read posts here criticising Eps 1 and 2 for being 'for kids'. Now I was 5yrs old when ANH came out, and nothing can compare with the amazed brain of a 5 yr old watching stormtroopers and tie fighters and jedi and wookies. Now I'm 30. It'd be a pretty tall order for the new movies to make me feel as amazed as I was when I was 5. My 5 yr old son absolutely loves the new films. Funnily enough he isn't over keen on the original trilogy, they probably look a little grey and dull to him after the amazing sfx in Ep1 and 2. I once met an artist who used to draw for 2000AD, and in conversation with him let rip my disapointment with the recent comics. 'It's rubbish now' I said, 'Nothing like as good as it was.' His reply was like a bucket of cold water. 'It's just the same as it ever was, mate. It's you who's changed.' Guys we should love the films for what they are, but I believe the new films aren't for us. They're for our kids. Please no more 'It's for kids' criticism. Thank god it is, or else maybe we would never have loved it as much as we do. Ok ,rant over. Tyto
Monkeh
I disagree, im 15 and i enjoyed the original 3 more than the new 2, i just feel that the original 3 had a beter develpment of the charecters with han and leia exchanging snide comments to each other, with the new ones thye rely alot on SFX, i enjoyed Eps. 2 but it just did not not do it for me like the original, i dont count Eps. 1 as a film as it was a poor film all over except for the SFX but they aint as important as a good script and plot. Tyto
I'm glad you enjoyed the OT as much as I did, it gives me hope that the current generation aren't completely lost . I wasn't saying that the new films are better, worse or the same as the OT. That subject has been covered before and I'm sure will be again. All I wanted to say was how strange it is to hear the films being criticised as 'for kids'. Of course they are, I mean duh! Tyto
Monkeh
Yea i see what u where saying but i feel that when ppl say for kidies they are really saying it was a heavily comercialised (sp? ) and created to sell kids toys, i mean look at the amount of cheap tat that came along with episode 1. Jedi_Monk
I don't think they're for kids--they're for Lucas, now. And fortunately, Lucas and me, we have the same taste in movies
Tyto
Well, I think criticising a film for being commercially viable is also peculiar. It's almost as though we don't want the films to be successful, as though success means it loses it's cult status and therefore credibility. ( I felt the same when the cartoon of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out) It's ours how dare anybody else make it commercially successful. I hope they are! There's nothing I want more, than to go shopping for some more SW figures with my son. I had to make him ask for a Jango fig this week, he just wanted R2. Why are we so critical of Lucas making money from his creation? Weird. Tyto
happydan
im well aware of the fact that the OT is romanticized in my mind. i really really love the new moves as well as the OT. theres room for all in my heart
Monkeh
no what i meant was that the film was created so that it would ship loads of cheap kiddies tat i have no objections with him making loads of money.
Jedi_Monk
SW has always been hyper-commercialized... Lucas was the one who practically INVENTED the way movies are marketted today! ANH had a ton of action figures, halloween costumes and such.

happydan
he cut the merchandising by 2/3 for this movie compared to Ep1. ive been noticing the absense of starwars flamethrowers and lunchboxes
Pedantic
Episode II sure had a lot of violence for a "kid's movie." Did you notice how many body parts were flyin'? Not that I mind, 'cause that's what I've always wanted to see from a Star Wars movie.

Homosexual Ewok
I find it funny how people always give Lucas a bad rap about making money. Last time I checked this was America and that is kind of what 99% of us who live here set out to do. Lucas took film making to levels it probably would have reached, but he did it years before anyone thought it possible. Think about all the movies with mind-blowing effects over the last few years, T2, Jurassic Park, the Matrix, and Spider-Man. You have Lucas to thank for those effects. ILM may not have done each movie, but they changed the industry standard "guy holding a plastic spaceship up with fishing string" into what it is today. Like the surround sound in the theaters? Lucas again. As for merchandising, don't forget Lucas funds these Star Wars movies out of his own pocket, no studio funding. You have any better ideas on how to come up with 150 million every 3 years? Besides no one ever held a gun to anyone’s head and forced them to buy a plastic Chewbacca figure. Did I like the OT better? Yes, but then again I was a kid. Go back and watch the OT, there are a lot of cheesy things that would draw major heat from fans today if presented for the first time. Well I'm making certain assumptions about what you are saying here, but I think you may have missed my point slightly. I love the films too! Having said that I am realistic enough to know who they are for, and why i love them. It's probably because they make me feel 5 yrs old again Tyto
SharaFett
it really makes me angry that certain newspapers make it personal for one reason or another and insult Lucas himself. If i saw these critics face to face, i undoubtedly would give their less-notable face a nice beating with my Princeton fist. these people make me very angry George lucas is just a man. A simple man. A man trying to tell the story of these people in a galaxy far, far away. His storytelling, for all of his movies, make us feel gushy. Like a kid again. I can speak for myself that it truly was an exciting experience to go see star wars: ep2. This was the first time i went opening day for a movie (besides LOTR, but this movie blows LOTR to the water. period.), and just being around the star wars crowd and clapping and cheering alongside everyone in the theatre is something i'll always remember. I hope George Lucas doesnt read the paper but merely goes to the theatres and sees all the grownup's faces with smirks and the little childrens' faces with awe. He created this world. And for that he is a genious.
