Light Saber Colors *slight AOTC spoilers*

In AOTC, why were there only a few different colors for the lightsabers? Every one but Mace and Dooku had either a blue or a green one, and I thought that the lightsaber was not only their weapon, but also a kind of an extension of themselves, and they would choose a color to reflect their personality. I mean, hell, in the the NJO books, the Jedi there have every color on the rainbow, and then some, so whats the deal here?

Red green and blue are the primary colors of the light spectrum.

The red has to do with artificial Sith crystals which are imbued with the power of the dark side. It's all in your EP 2 visual dictionary. Mace's is purple because he uses some special crystal, but other than purple, the ONLY colors are red blue and green.

Of course if you want to look at it this way, you could:

In the Prequel era and before that it was tradition for the Jedis in the Order to only use blue and green sabers. After the purge and so much knowledge was lost, Luke would have had no knowledge of this tradition and allowed his New Jedi order to fashion whaever color sabers best reflected themselves.

Ok, first a disclaimer...I have NO clue what I'm talking about. Just throwing this out there.

First, when Sith and Jedi battled constantly, there were only two colors. Red and blue. It was like army uniforms...you could easily tell who is ally and enemy. Now when the Sith "disappeared", there were only blue ones for a while...but decided that they needed a second color since training with only blue sabers made it hard to tell whose saber was where. So they made green.

Now, there's also a technical answer...originally Lucas only wanted red and blue because you should be able to tell who's evil and who's good right away. Then the green was made because the old blue saber wouldn't show up well on Jabba's barge against the blue sky.

HEY ALL OF YOU! RGB VALUES ARE ONLY RELEVANT WITH DIGITAL SPECTRUMS! RED YELLOW AND BLUE ARE THE TRUE PRIMARY COLORS!

RED+BLUE=PURPLE

BLUE+YELLOW=GREEN

YELLOW+RED=ORANGE

Now, depending on whether the spectum is light or paint, the 3 mixed together create white or black.

R+B+Y=White: Light

R+B+Y=Black: Paint

Digital sources such as a computer are programed differently, replacing yellow with green for some reason. The only variance in this that I have seen are graphics programs such as Photoshop which allow the option of choosing color the way a printer does: CMYK which means: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black.

Obviously these are the optimal variations of Blue Red and Yellow, for the purpose of creating a much broader range of color and black due to the fact that since the digital spectrum is a light, the mixture of the three primary colors produces white. And in print, it is more efficient to have a black ink instead of mixing the primary colors each time black is needed. I hope I have cleared this up.

George Lucas = Master of Star Wars.

George said only Red, Green, and Blue. Then he allowed Purple, but he made sure that the canonical references hinted that Mace's saber was not normal. Unique. Because he was an Uber Master or whatnot.

Books=Liscenced yes, but when it comes down to it, movies over books.

Yes, only green and blue for the jedi is canon. Mace got a purple lightsaber because Samuel Jackson wanted one. But in EU (expanded universe) there are many different colours, and since JK2 seems to be in the EU (since it has Lukes Jedi Acedemy at Yanvin 4, Mara Jade, etc.) thats why there's many saber colours.
