RDSport323
Im running Linux ded 1.02c, and everytime the map changes, a few clients get "timed out" and drop the server... but there are a few that were able to change maps successfully.. I find that happening every map change, with my server losing a few players each map change... Sometimes I even kicked timed out... Basically what happens is the game pretty much freezes... Is there any way to fix this? or is there a reason why this is happening? Also, another issue... Everytime a player joins my server, for some reason the game lag spikes, or whenever I press the Tab button, it would spike... Is that common? or just my own problem? thanks! MatrixCPA
Regarding players getting dropped at map changes, you should check to see what you have for sv_timeout. I would recommend you set it to at least 60--I use 120 personally. Basically what is happening is that the clients aren't able to load the map before the timeout limit is reached and so the server drops them. As far as lag when a player joins, that could be the result of them joining with a new model/skin that you have installed but hadn't loaded into memory yet because nobody was using it when you joined. You can "delay" that loading until you hit the TAB key by setting the following cvar in your client config (not the server): seta cg_deferPlayers "1" You'll still get the lag when you hit TAB, but at least you can choose when to accept the lag rather than just getting hit with it when someone joins. RDSport323
Oh... thank you for your quick respond Matrix... I checked my server, and the setting was already set at 120... And so, now I changed it to the default of 200... I will see if that works or not.. Im just surprised all of the players that connect to my server, say that during map changes, they get timed out... or it even crashes their whole computer that they would need to restart it... They also say that it only happens on my server... which makes me wonder.. oh well, I'll try what you suggested, and will let u know the outcome. THANKS AGAIN
Cedrin
MatrixCPA, actually most of the time it isnt the timeout. From what I hear from a lot of players is that they will crash right after map change. It has also happends to me several times. Right after the scores and everyone clicks ready, it will just stall at that menu until I decide to CTRL-ALT-DEL and end the process. MatrixCPA
I would figure that such a problem is a client-side issue then and not something being caused server-side. Even if the server rotates to a custom map that the player doesn't have, the game should exit gracefully to the mp screen and not just seize up. BTW, the reason I mention the timeout setting is because there were several configs being passed around that had it set to 15 seconds and it was the root of many drops. disdainmsh
This has started happening on my server as well, 1.03a. It seems like it could be a server side thing because when it does happen, it happens to everyone. If everyone drops and rejoins, the server is usually fine, however it will still be on the just completed map. It's happened while I've been on it, and it seems to dump everyone, not just one or two. Most of the time however everyone switches just fine. My timeout setting is at 120 as well. I haven't noticed it happening on any particular map. geronimo27
As far as I know, there isn't anything to be done about lag caused by players joining the server. I ran a JK2 server on both win2k and linux, and this issue has existed on both OSes.
MatrixCPA
Do you get any server console message when they are dropped? Such as: server command overflow? Or does it just say they timed out?
RDSport323
Well, so far after I changed the timeout setting to 200 and then again to 240, it helped a little, instead of 7 of the 10 players getting dropped, only 2-3 get dropped... But then 24hrs later, it started again and around 6-7 of the 10 players would get dropped during the map change. I haven't been able to see my server console logs quite yet... But, on the screen it just says "XXXXXX timed out"... Could it be lack of memory? or.... I know my bandwidth is not a problem, could it be something with the computer? Another issue I am having is, if there are no players on the server, when the timelimit is up for a mapchange, the server doesnt change the map.. it just sits there... And then, once someone joins, it goes "READY" XXXXX and then it will change the map... Otherwise, the map stays the same, and doesnt change. anyone else experiencing that problem? MatrixCPA
What's wrong with the map not changing if nobody is on the server anyway? As far as the players getting dropped, have you checked to see if you have any problems with packet loss? I know that sometimes people get routed through particular nodes that aren't quite up to snuff and the server suffers because of it. You might take note if the players who are timing out are 56k or broadband and their ip addresses. You could then do a trace and see if there's a problem.
