BradFu
I'm all for photo-realistic faces. The more real the characters are, the funner the game!
YoDa2k2
I dont get why people like photo faces so mutch! THEY DONT FIT IN A GAME! they look so butt-fricken ugly! even the padame model does (no offence Gato...) and shes hot!
ZaMeNtiK
YoDa2k2 is right, they don't look real, they look like **** on a model, plus it looks like you don't know how to skin or anything...
ReIIiK
Thats an insult to skinners, YOU THINK ITS EASY TO MAKE A PHOTO FACE! go and try......its hard as hell to make it look good, I know cuz I've tried. Â
BradFu
Ok, so a Photo-Realistic face looks less real? What strange alternate universe are you from? First of all, the word realistic contains the word real for a reason. Second, you guys haven't seen a single in-game shot of this skin yet, so how do you know what it'll look like? Character faces in games are not the way they are because the game makers like that particular style, but rather, it's harder, and sometimes impossible to get photo-realistic skins going. If someone here can do it, you should be showering them with praises If it turns out it doesn't look good in-game, I'll be the first to say it should be changed, but as it is now, it looks very nice. Sounds Risky
I think what he means is that by trying to make it photo-realistic it goes out of style with the rest of the game. All of the other characters have a surrealistic quality to them and it's usually best to keep that style. It probably wouldnt be too hard to "fix" the face once it's done. SirYawnalot
Methinks Yoda's thinking of the rubbish existing Anakins, Padmes etc. out there who basically take an existing model and map a photo-realistic face onto it, and some of the character's clothes. They're destined to look crap, because to make a realistic portrayal of a real person, you have to make a special model to match them. You can't use the Fayar model for Anakin, because they both look entirely different. Some people don't seem to realise this-- even the skinners themselves --and Yoda seems to be one of them. Â I reckon people will stop complaining about this model when it has hair and is stuck onto the model, so they can see that the skin for the face really is a triumph. As for the Padme model in progress, I don't want to hear ANYBODY knocking that, it's looking incredible, and time can only make it better.

Im not saying this guy is stupid for makeing it a photo face but its just how i feal about them  And BradFu, when did i ever say they look less real? i think takeing a 2d photo and puting it on a 3d model looks rather stupid (NM i just realized that some one else said it doesnt look real not me, sorry BradFU)
ZaMeNtiK
ok I didn't mean to write it looks less real, that was an error, just that it looks awful in my opinion. First of all, what OCH said . Â Second, there's always lightning in pictures, if you put it into a model, the light in the skin and the scene will blend creating a horrible look to the character. Â Third, this skin, for example (no offence, Librarian) looks "pixelated", and in an attempt to adapt it to fit the model, it has lost many of the actor's traits. Â Fourth and last, it's a loss of time, the difference in time spent adapting the pic, and the time and effort of actually creating a skin is little and judging by qulity and fitness in the game makes actually skinning the best choice. If not, why don't major game companies use photo-realistic textures at all? Â That's my opinion on the issue, I'm allowed to have it, everyone else is allowed to have one, too. Â EDIT: ReIIiK, I AM a skinner, and I have tried it, they're obviously not perfect-looking, but don't look bad, and it's harder to make it yourself and get it to look right, imo. Â Now, Librarian, I have a picture I made myself to put on my WIP-Anakin-from-Ep.2-model(Yeah, pics coming soon... ) for reference but just to see if it was looking like him, you may have it if you want, just email me, and trust me, your model will look a lot more like Anakin with him. Â And I want to offer myself to skin your model, too, just cause I don't wanna see it with a photo-realistic skin ^_^ That's if you want... *rests fingers for all that typing*
The Librarian
I'd like to clear something up ... I think I did mention it when I first uploaded the pictures of the face .. Â THIS IS NOT THE FINAL SKIN Â It is a quick slap-dash job done by me to get an idea if the face is in the right proportions ... Â This skin job took about 5 minutes and I'll have an experienced skinner working on the skin (I hope your're experienced Elessil ) Â Umm ... and I won't be updating for a while .. the power supply on my computer is messing up and I think I'll need a new one so I won't be working on the model for at least a few days .. Â Sorry to keep those who want the model waiting .. Â - The Librarian

Just look at this WIP Anakin. http://hem.passagen.se/elight/pimps/anakinsky.jpg? A non-photo-face skin is much better imho.
ReIIiK
Grafox, I'm going to brake one of my own rules (never compair models). But I don't think that model is all that great, the head needs reworking big time, and the skin doesn't look like Anakin, in part due to the model not being close to what his face is shaped like. Â Well, first of all, it isn't my model. Second of all, I agree with you on your points towards the mesh. Third of all, I just like non-photo skins better, because the artist really does a good job. And the skins just look tons better ingame then photo ones. The photo ones also have wrong lighting and such. Â But this is just my personal opinion. iTeM
Isn't the guy who's doing the padme model using a photo realistic face? Â Not sure, but I think I've read it somewhere before. Â THAT face looks great anyhow...
morphius_doh
Haven't you read Librarian's response to this subject!? Â I'll save you the trouble and give you the quote right here: Â "I'd like to clear something up ... I think I did mention it when I first uploaded the pictures of the face .. And a damned good one!
Uber Sith
Agreed.....i didnt even know it was photo realistic until now- The padme one that is... Â and by the way.......both ways of skinning work. for instance ya have got a great pamde skin on the face and a great dooku skin without photo on face.. they both rock
morphius_doh
That face doesn't come close to what Hayden looks like! For starters: there's way too much shading, it looks like he just washed his face in soot; the eyebrows are to pointed and angled. It looks more like a young Robert Stack, from Unsolved Mysteries. Â I'm sticking with the photo-realistic face, even though it has its flaws it resembles Hayden closer than this one. And yes I know it's a WIP, but the face will need a complete overhaul to even come close to any resemblance. Â And who said the face won't be photo-realistic. The only place that remotely says anything about that is where Grafox says "And I want to offer myself to skin your model, too, just cause I don't wanna see it with a photo-realistic skin ^_^ That's if you want..." Â Just because someone is making a non photo-realistic face of Anakin doesn't mean it's going to be on this particular model. Â Sorry if I sound harsh, but I just can't stand the thought of having that face on this model. IMHO it would ruin it.
Elessil
Librarian - I'm not a really experienced skinner, but I AM an experienced 2D artist, and will give my best to not let people down. Â As for the face, I am planning on doing a photo-realistic face - some of you will like to hear this, others not, but I wont just slap a photo on it, but do edits. Lots of them. Â However, should someone else want to skin it differently - just ask Librarian if you may so, and do it! Nothing in the world is keeping you from it, and I'll be the last person to say that the skin I'll be doing (which will hopefully come out as great as the model) will be the ultimate one everybody has to like. morphius_doh
Elessil, I have your version of Anakin and I must say you did an excellent job with the skinning. Other than the Tyrion model, yours is the only one I will use.

ZaMeNtiK
morphius_doh, it was me who said that, not Grafox. And when Librarian said Elessis was going to work on the skin I thought he meant he was going to make it from scratch, but he's not. At least he's gonna edit it, I hope he does it good, what I don't like is when ppl use the photo-realistic skins and don't edit them or anything so they suck. Sounds Risky
He's using Hayden's face as a base, which is what the people at Raven do for their models (people's faces, not just Hayden's), so it's all good.
