The basis of star wars? What is its background?

Jungian psychology. (pronounced Youngian btw)

Carl Jung believed in a collective unconsciousness (the force)

He also envisioned a light side and dark side of sorts.

Lucas basically personified Jungian psych. in star wars.

My psych teacher explains it better, but oh well.

Its not quite that simple. A large part of it, especially Episode IV, were based on Japanese stuff, specifically Fortress I'm told. Never seen it myself, but I've heard a number of people say that. Anyway, the plot in itself is hardly unique, and has been done it a lot of movies, but well, Star Wars just has something which makes it special.

PS I don't buy that Jungian stuff, but I never listen to psychologists either, so that might have something to do with it.

But no one ever points out that Jung was a big pothead...

so the answer is drugs...lots of drugs...

A New Hope is largely based on Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. The basic concepts are a mix of Feudal Japanese methodologies and old Buck Roger's serials. Like a funky mix of classic American pop-culture and Japanese cinema.

If you don't buy it, that's cool. But there's a lot evidence supporting it. This is not to say that Jungian psych is the only basis of star wars. The other Japanese and other stuff is probably correct too.

Basically Lucas plagiarized the whole thing. :)

Lucas said in an interview a few years ago that it was based impart on the Vietnam War. Rebels = Vietcong | Imperials = America and Allies.

Also he said in a recent interview that the force is like a meld of all different religions.

He also said he first envsioned star wars as like a half an hour saturday morning series like Flash Gordon. I'm not familiar with flash gordon.

Well in my local bookstore there was this really well-written, thorough book called 'Star Wars: the Magic of Myth' or something like that. The author explains pretty much everything in the star wars trilogy by relating them to Myths (and some japanese stuff too (ie. samurai)).

it was really a good book I just sat down in the store and read it. it has a lot of cool photos and diagrams and even shots of the saber-duels but in the photos you can see the steel rods that the actors duelled with before they are colored in as sabers.

here's a link to the book cover:

Well lets see, Yung vs Japanese ideas. Hmm. Jung sounds asian to me. An the asian ideas of collective unconscence were around before Yung. Maybe Yung just stole or expnded on asian ideas . Most ideas come from previous knowledge or theory. The force as talked about in SW also sounds alot like the idea of Chi(life force).

Sean, I also keep thinking of it like Chi(in the anime sense, not the health sense :p). Especially in that users of it can feel others around them, especially if they can use it as well. But what sets it apart is that the Force can seemingly have a will of its own at times. I'm pretty sure Chi is supposedly just energy that sits around waiting to be used.

No I'm not a bhudist master or anything, but uhm... Chi isn't only expessed that way in animie heheh... Though maybe thats where you heard about it... heheh chi as far as I know it is both accurately portrayed in it's uses in medicine, and occasionaly in Animie (though animie of course takes it to extremes and makes it more extraordiniary in how it's used heheh)

Yeah well, in this context I really think it makes more sense to take the anime style of Chi. You know, where you can blow up a planet by looking at it. I mean, which fits better with Star Wars? Mellowing out and getting in touch with nature while controlling your pulse, or using life energy to blow the living bejesus out of something? :p
