dendol
at the end of ep1, he says something like hes going to be keeping an eye on young anakin's career. In ep2 we also see him with anakin in his chambers talking. so does palpatine know that anakin is the chosen one who will bring balance to the force (and thus be the one who will kill him)? if so, why does he try to recruit him and not try to kill him? and then it rotj, palpatine encourages luke to kill vader and be his new apprentice. Its obvious to us viewers that either anakin or luke is the chosen one (i think its anakin), but it also seems palpatine is oblivious to it. So is it safe to conclude that palpatine doesnt know about the prophecy? or doesnt believe in it?
Norin Radd
I would conclude just the opposite. Palpatine, you can be sure is well versed in Jedi history and as a powerful practitioner of the Force himself, I have no doubt that he can sense Anakin's power. This is why he begins to beguile Anakin in Episode 1("We'll watch your career with great interest"). Episode 2("You don't need guidance Anakin, I can see that you are becoming the most powerful of all Jedi")Fueling Anakin's already glaring arrogance. You can see how Anakin idolizes Palpatine almost moreso than his Master Obi-Wan. I would not be surprised if in Episode 3, we see that Palpatine intended to bring Anakin to the Dark Side all along. Just my $0.02.
Redwing
You know, it seems to me that Palpatine thinks "bringing balance to the Force" would entail killing off the Jedi. Maybe Palpatine even thinks HE is the fulfilment of the prophecy!
MotionMan
Maybe palpatine knows that Anakin is the chosen one all along. "keep your friends close and your enemies even closer" Im not saying that is how sidious thinks but think about it: He might know that anakin will probably kill him one day. and i say MAY. So why not want luke to dispose of him and then he has a new aprentice without worring that he will be killed by anakin one day. -2 birds with one stone:) Just a thought....heh, I dont beleive this myself... JK_Morovski
yeah the prophecy doesnt say which side (dark/light) it will bring balance to...... so i would guess he thinks that if the side which gains balance is unclear, its worth getting the chosen one on side? ET Warrior
Palpatine MUST know about the prophesy..i mean, you don't make plans to take on an enemy as tough as the Jedi knights without first knowing as much as you possibly can about them, PLUS he also has an ex-jedi that serves him....so pretty much he knows all there is to know......he probably chooses anakin because he knows that Anakin will be uber powerful, and if he becomes a Jedi, it will be pretty darn hard to exterminate the jedi knights..
