They were sith padawans. The only sith master was Sidious/Palpantine.

Remember that Qui-Gon used the living force. He was much better in the force than Maul, but Maul was specially trained in the hard double- sabering, wich made him a sligthly more dangerous opponent.

he was a knight. and i bet if he survived he would have become more powerful than any sith or jedi

If you guys want to read up on the EU, do as I did, go to http://www.starwars.com. I have only read three of the actual books, but starwars.com has the gist of everything that goes on in it. Just go to the databank section, pick a character, any character, and start reading under the "Extended Universe" tab. They also have a section exclusively for the EU characters.

As for the Sith titles, I believe they don't use the same titles as Jedi, mainly because after the downfall of the sith 1000 years before Ep1, the last remaining Sith, called Darth Bane, made a rule that at any given time, there would only be one Sith apprentice and one Sith master, so that the the Sith could not only stay a secret, but so that there wouldn't be any battles between themselves for power, as this is what caused the first downfall of the Sith.

Their only real titles are "Master" and "Apprentice", but they all refer to themselves and fellow Sith as "Lords", I suppose because they believe they are destined to rule the universe.
