im pretty sure that you have seen the emperor game and dont u think that the way it was made would fit battle grounds better then if u used the same method as aok. it would look so much better, and i think people would be alot more happier, also , it seems that it would fit a starwar game perfect. what i mean is to use a 3d engine instead of the old 2d. also most people now days have pretty strong video cards and we would like to use it to it full potential, like the transform & lighting and stuff like that.

hi red, welcome to these boards!

in regards to your question, we actually had a talk about other upcoming 3D games such as warcraft III. i think WC 3 will be the bomb, others don't agree. however, i'm pretty sure you've seen the screenshots of swgb and to most of us here, we think that the AoK engine is the best fit for this game. here are my ideas as to why:

- unit detail is maxed out b/c instead of having that top down perspective, you can see units as they were in the movies

- actually, i'm not sure if there are a lot of people here with powerful computers. if you've played Aok, you'll notice that the screens look great while running on a system that is relatively low compared to the most recent 'power' computers. plus, each civ has 200 units and in the trade federation you actually have 800 units max on single player. for the ultimate multiplayer experience without much lag time, a 2D experience is grand.

- so far, 3D games i've seen or heard about (warcraft 3, myth II) don't allow for large armies. rather, you can only control a handful of them. in swgb, you can emass some serious numbers of units to re-enact those large epic battles in the movies...

hope this helps:D

it's hard to say b/c none of us have even seen this game in action. i have a thread under the galactic discussions forum that talks about SW GAmer magazine previewing this game. the editor mentioned that this game should be out by thanksgiving.

i'll say this though, lucasarts has spiffy sounds in most of their games (ever heard of THX?), so i'd think that this game should have great sound. supposedly, this game will run on a 200 Mhz computer, so the graphics may be a little better than AoK, and AoK has great graphics to begin with.

I do think GB will be beter that AoK ... Not because of the engine, altough that will be slightly improved, but because of the whole atmosphere. You actually have six totally different looking civs, 6 (AoK had 5) campaigns chock full of speech. Fresh new ways to play (Aircraft, Shielding, Power Suplies ... and all those others) and ofcourse ... fresh stratagies.

GB will be a better game ... Cause they built it on a good foundation.

Ick! No 3D game engine.... boo hiss!!

I'm glad this game isn't 3D, if possible I would prefer GB 2 to be 2D as well. There's lot's of failed 3D RTS games out there for people who want them, but those games spend so much time perfecting their graphics they are usually short on game play.

Not to mention that no matter how fast your computer is, if you're stuck on a 56k modem it's just not going to play as well online. There's still lot's of us using 56k, and not by choice either. There simply isn't anything else out here where I live and it doesn't appear that will change anytime soon:(

Games are rapidly getting to the point of being so graphic intensive that it will be impossible to play online with a 56k modem. A foolish decision on game makers parts because it severly limits their customer base.

3D graphics in a RTS doesn't actually add anything to the game (except for space based games of course), it's just a buzz word to put on the back of the box.

LOL! no offence but since the game is in late QA, don't you think an engine change now was leaving it abit late? :D

who here has played BFD and liked it? i played it for maybe 2 days and each second was pain.....Dune 2 in my mind was the greatest RTS game EVER made......and i REALLY wanted to like the new dune game......but danm, that game was just BORING!.....+ they destroyed the devastator by making it some kind of retarded mech ;)

in conclusion: its the gameplay that makes the game......not how pretty the lights are.

I did. Emperor Battle for Dune, was a very good game in my opion. I didn't beat it for a couple of weeks. Most games last 2 days.

I still prefer 2d RTS games.

But didn't you think it stunk because Anti-Air units are illegal in the first month?

I mean how are you going to win when you can't even kill the air units that are blowing away your base:mad:

yes homeworld was a HUGE exception and so was Ground Control.....they are the few games that actully were better 3D.....but the majority were just terrable......spent more time on dynamic lighting and textures than actully making a worth while game! (eg. EBD.....)

WoW I loved Ground Control!!! I thought it had fallen into obscurity though. I got great reviews but nobody got it...well at least people that I knew.

Also Empire Earth looks to be one of the best 3d games that have come out yet. It looks so awesome.
