Xzzy
it's a tool, not an apprentice That means if you want to use the tool well you need to be smart enough to know what it can do to make your job easier. I use it a lot for prototyping areas out, so I can do a fast vis and check if I like the dimensions and flow. If it made perfect rooms.. they wouldn't need us to make jk2 maps, now would they? darth_micke
Xzzy, well I agree....Its makes it easier... But it often gets better making it all by yourself... Xzzy, btw..can u check my thread 'bout the sound prob.....maybe u could help...Thx!
Xzzy
> Xzzy, btw..can u check my thread 'bout the sound > prob.....maybe u could help...Thx! i would, if I had anything to say on the subject. I'm at work and can't test what you're trying to do (linux = no jk2). i guess just read the manual on qeradiant.com, under the target entity section. make sure you have all the keys set properly. Grets Sirob
The hollow tool is not evil. Neither is csg subtract for that reason(it's just that the clipper tool is much more efficient). You can use the hollow tool, and still not get any z-fighting. It's so easy, you'll kick yourself when you find out. The hollow tool hollows out a room, right? And it makes the edges z-fight, right? Yes to both. To fix the z-fighting, all you have to do is resize the brushes. It's that easy. Just make the walls smaller, so it doesn't z-fight. (Geeze, I can't believe I had to explain that to them... pathetic) I shall rule the galaxy.

idontlikegeorge
lol i cant believe a thread was based off one of my quotes! yeah IF you clean up the inefficiencies of certain "shortcut" tools, then by all means use them; its just using them without realizing what they do, can be detrimental to the quality of your map. i personally like to make things manually
RichDiesal
All tools are useful in their own ways - the point is that when you first start mapping, you need to do everything yourself first. That way you understand what the tool does and does not do. Just like when you first learn Calculus (for those of you that have). At first, they teach you the long, horribly drawn out, unbelievably complicated way to do it... then after seeing why it works, they show you the 5-second method. Same basic concept here. If you learn to make rooms only using the hollow tool, you'll never have a firm grasp of what exactly consitutes "a room." If you learn to make them piece by piece and then experiment with the tools to figure out how to do that easier, then you've just learned how to map, now haven't you? Besides, it's a HELL of a lot easier and faster to make some crazy shaped room and just drag the verticies than it is to make it brush by brush, probably creating leaks in the process.
