Jedi religion ties with earth

I was just thinking how much jediism in starwars is a mix between certain religions but most of all buddism. Think about it... everything buddists/other religions also do:

1.Meditation.

2.Warrior monks (e.g. jedi knights)

3.Believe in a life force (e.g Ki or chi (dont know correct spellin))

4.Wear robes.

5.Lead simple lives

6.can not become close to anyone.

Also lightsabres and there figthing style match that of Kendo which is the fighting with bamboo swords with the most weight in the handle so there is an almost weightless blade.

I thought somebody might be interested to know whether lucas was conciously copying these to create jedi in sw. but even if he was it still kicks ass.:)

Exactly... I'm not sure if you were here when that other guy posted that thread, but someone already beat you to this one... except for the fact that he was all pissed off about it.... *sigh* another lost soul. Film making is an art. Art is never copying, even if itz the same picture. You still put your mark on it.

I think jedi force religion is mostly related to christianity,

what with the light side/ darkside of the force, and mostly because of the "chosen one" who will bring balance to the force, kinda like jesus.

Good point but im gonna go with covenent on this topic because thier customs are a lot like buddism.

I don't really see it as being like Christianity (except perhaps for the "birth" of Anakin, though Christianity is hardly the only religion which contains such an event). I always thought of the Force like Yin-Yang, a balancing of positive and negative energy. It certainly works to represent Luke (mostly good with some evil) and Vader (mostly evil with some good) as we see them in the Empire and Jedi, especially Jedi. So that would chalk it up as what... Taoism?

The Force is also a sentient thing that has a Will and a plan for the universe and can manipulate the universe (usually in subtle ways). That piece of the Force is similar to God. Also, while the basic uniform of the Jedi are far-eastern in their appearance, the robe they wear is similar to the hooded robe a Christian monk wears. Knighthood itself is Western.

The Dark Side and Light Side can't be compared to yin/yang because the yin and the yang are in balance, where the Dark Side throws the Force out of balance. The Dark Side is an aberration and the Light Side wants to get rid of it; the Sith can be compared to fallen angels, beings given great power who turned against the good thing that gave them that power.

The Force is a composite, and I bet people of any religion could find elements of their faith in it.

Yes any faith and I mean ANY faith has to have some relation to this whole force thing.

And prophecies, meditation, and stuff are found in Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism.

Lucas had to get this idea from somewhere, I think he combined all of the religions I listed to some Super religion that he put in the movies:)

"The Force evolved out of various developments of character and plot. I wanted a concept of religion based on the premise that there is a God and there is good and evil. I began to distill the essence of all religions into what I thought was a basic idea common to all religions and common to primitive thinking. I wanted to develope something that was nmondenominational but still had a kind of religious reality. I believe in God and I believe that there are basic tenets which through history have developed into certainties, such as 'thou shalt not kill.' I don't want to hurt other people. 'Do unto others...' is the philosophy that permeates my work..."

Did u know some REALLY REALLY REALLY hardcore fan was int oStar Wars that he started Jediism in the UK.

I don't care how many times you've seen the movies, the number of times you've read the EU books, or how many action figures you have......

that has to be as hardcore as you can get.
