Bungalow
Can someone please explain the difference between the force that the Jedi Council believes in and the Living Force that Qui Gon Jin believes in. What is the difference? Both seem to be used the same way
Darth Groovy
A best explanation for this can be found in Terry Brooks Novelization for "The Phantom Menace". The Force according to this novel is broken down into several spiritual and physical levels called "planes" one could spend an entire lifetime mastering any one plane. Qui-Gon was more attuned to the "Living Force" which is why he developes attatchments to certain creatures he encounters. He does not know the importance of such creatures at the time he meats them, only that they are important for a greater cause. For example without Jar-Jar, the queen would not have made an alliance with the Gungans and would probably have to look forward to a life time of "Roger, Roger!" The movie does not explain this but it is difficult to understand. I must have read that part of the book a hundred times. Qui-Gonn never really liked Jar-Jar, he just new there was an importance to take him along, he served into the "Living Force"...dealing with the importance of given life forms to an otherwise greater cause. If you get a chance check out the book.
BCanr2d2
From reading the same book, I got a different take on the different Force beliefs... The Living Force is more of being in touch with every small ebb and flow of the Force, and reacting to it. This is where Jar Jar is taken in by Qui-Gon, where he sensed a flow in the Force that he should do something for him. Remember QJG tells Obi-Wan to concentrate on the here and now, rather than elsewhere. He uses a be mindful of the Force, but not at the expense of the moment, where he keeps his mind of the Force at all times. The Unifying Force is more of a looking at the long picture, seeing how to react in the long term view of the Force. This is where Windu and Yoda meditate to see what could happen. This is what Luke learns to do, when he sees Leia and Han in pain.

It has been a couple of years since I read that book and perhaps I need to go back and read it again.....especially that part. This book also gives the most in depth history of the sith to date!
