Anakin Posted September 9, 2002 Share Posted September 9, 2002 System Status 8/9/2002 - Security Issue on server 16 with installed IP's 217.158.55.6 - 16 Status: UPDATE We have discovered a security issue on server 16 this week. A security expert has examined the server and has diagnosed the following issue. 'A user on server 16 had breached security via a apache security hole. Although the server had software installed to try to prevent such access, the user used a port scan attack to gain access. The security breach was made to gain access to the network kernels of the server, in order to 'leach' bandwidth capacity from our Clara Net connection.' As of this breach, over 50Mb per sec of data was feeding down our Clara Net connection. To prevent further abuse of our and Clara Net's network, we were required to disconnect the server 16 from the Internet. We are currently recovering the data from one server and placing it on a new server. We aim to preserve the data on server 16, although in line of our SLA we can not guarantee a safe recovery of the data. We would like to apologise for this, and we are working as quickly as we can to resolve this situation. As security expert is currently dealing with the server and we aim for the server to be back online shortly. Thats all we have at the moment people. Im think they are trying to get some security in place before they stick it back up, its only on ours because we got a special deal and makes our server/site just kick ass and fast. The site that I was going to transfer to has seemed to of given me two sites http://www.aotctc.com and the have given me http://www.aotctc.org.uk when the site has been trasfered from our old server to this new one.
