Ok to make a server you must have the bandwidth and a minium of a 600mhz processor with 256mb ram and a 5400 (7200 rpm) hard drive of about 4gig in size.

Or

If your home computer is fast enough you can usei t. Make sure to disable the firewall and use a program like Jedirunner to configure the server.

You do not need to leave a server on all the time once it is up. You can turn it off and on when you want to. It only takes about 2 minutes to report to the master server and get listed in the master browser and gamespy network.

I run my server for about five to six hours a night and then turn it off until the next day. I still manage to be full every night.

As far as slowing your system down it all depends on what type of computer that you have.

Mine is a custom built AMD system with a 1333 processor ,512ddr, ABIT board ,Raid system in Raid 0 and a high speed cable connection. This runs the server and allows me to play at the same time, all on one machine. If I need to do other things I still can at a very minimal slow down.

Give it a try one night and see how your system performs. Make sure that you know your connection upload speed (goto http://www.dslreports.com or a similar site to find out) and set your maxrate accordingly.

Good luck but watch out, its addictive to run servers!

My server runs off a PII 400 (well its a dual PII 400, but the server code don't do no SMP :() just fine. You're just compensating for OS overhead with all that extra horsepower. Run a *NIX server. :)

A hitch warning means you are short of cpu power or a general system shortage. It should be ok but you reallyy want hitch warnings below 600.

Also in the Quake 3 Team Arena Engine it will auto detect your dual cpu setup and send all data thru one cpu and leave the other for the os. So a 600mhx computer and a dual p2 with 400 in it are going to run the game about the same. The Quake 3 engine required you to change the cvar to let it know you had a dual cpu setup so it would take one cpu for the game. This is per my local computer store owner. He runs lots of game servers.
