Smellincoffee
I'm new here. I'm planning on getting the GB Saga bundle for Christmas, so I'm downloading patches, reading reviews, etc. I don't plan on going to sleep until midday of December 26. . I found these forums and figured I'd say hello. I have no idea what's in store for me regarding the game. My RTS experience is limited to Star Trek: Armada, Star Trek: Armada 2, and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2. I have a few qeustion about the game. 1.) In the original game, can I play the four campaigns in any order I like? Like, if I want to play as the Naboo and skip the Empire and the Wookiee's camapgins completly? In Armada 1, I could skip around, which I liked, but they took that away in A2, so I had to play the Federation's ten missions just to play as the Klingons. Oy vey. I've already read that in CC, you HAVE to play the Conferderacy first. 2.) How do these tech levels work, exactly? 3.) How complicated is the resource collecting? I like Armada a LOT better than Armada 2. Why? In A1, I have one resource. In A2, there's three. In CnC, there's one. Well, two sources, but they give you the same resource. (Ore and crystals give you money) I know you have to make food, mine carbon, get "nova", whatever the heck that is, and some other resource, but how easily are they mined/produced? In all three of the RTS's I'm used to, you just make a station for that particular thing. Or, in A2's case, with latinum, you just use freighters to hault the stuff to a starbase. 4. For skirmish games against the computers, can I set the computer's AI level, build cost/time, do teams (like me and a computer verus two computers), choose starting locations, set the amount of beginning resources? 5. Can you set the overall difficulty for the game, and does thid actually have a noticeable effect? That's all my questions for now, hope I didn't annoy anyone. BTW, anyone here like Star Trek? If you hate it, please don't mention that fact.
Darth Windu
G'day coffe, welcome to the board. Like you, my experience was limited to games such as 'Armada' and the C&C series. SW:GB is more like AoE2. It plays quite different to the other RTS's you listed, and is very confusing at first, but when you get the hang of it, it's quite a good game. As for your questions- 1. You can play any of the 6 SW:GB campaigns in any order (unfortunately there's no Naboo campaign), but the 2 campaigns in the CC expansion pack must be played in order. 2. Kinda hard to explain, best to play the game and see for yourself. 3. Resource collecting is much more complicated than Armada and A2. There are four resources: Carbon, Nova, Ore and Food. Your worker can collect any of the resources and will desposit it at the relevant resource dump. 4. Unfortunately, no. The only way to set starting locations and resource amounts is to create a senario. As for build time etc, you can't change it. 5. Yes, there are different difficultly setting's. PS: I love Star Trek
Sithmaster_821
2. You hit a button, lose some resourses, wait a while and BAM, you can build more units/buildings:)
Smellincoffee
Darth- I figured so, your sig has one of the DS9 episode titles in it. I love DS9. Thank you, both of you. I'm going to see about getting AoK II and the Conquerors Expansion if I can..

Guest DarthMaulUK
Hi Welcome to the website. With Q5.... the AI is much better in the Clone Campaigns add-on. The computer will actually build a counter to your attack..such as anti air turrets against your air units if you hit him with air. With the resource side of things, getting food early on is important so you can build more workers. The more workers you have, the quicker you can build and gather. You can also assign more than 1 worker to build a structure..which is cool. Make sure you check out the Civilisation sections on the site for full details and also the Strategy sections for useful tips and info from actual game experts. Kryllith
Just to add a bit more. I've not played any of those RTS's you have, so I don't know how many similarities exist between them... 1. Windu pretty much nailed this. Only things I might add is that there is a training campaign in the original GB to help you get started and you can pretty much pick and choose between them as you wise (except in CC). So if you start a campaign, you don't have to completely finish all the scenarios in it before playing around with another (again, except in CC). 2. Tech Levels basically work as your limiting factor. You don't have to advance all the upgrades in your current tech level to advance to the next (though you do need to research lower techs before higher ones become available, provided they follow the same line of techs). Also, in addition to the resource and time cost, you need to meet a building requirement. For example, to advance to Tech III, you need to have at least 2 Tech II buildings built, having 100 Tech I buildings won't do it. 3. Only thing really to add to this is that food can be collected in a variety of ways (gathering berries, hunting, fishing, farming, farming, and ranching certain animals) 4. You're given the choice of having low, medium (standard) or high, but you can't actually set the numbers of the resources yourself (unless you're building a scenario). This affects everyone in the game, so you won't start out with more or less than the computer. 5. Sadly, the computer can be notoriously stupid, although the AI has improved a bit with the CC upgrade. On the weakest setting, it has been known to surrender if you even threaten it with violence. At the highest level, it "cheats" by giving itself bonus resources both at the beginning of the game and at every tech level it reaches. If you can survive to Tech IV against on hardest, though, the computer becomes relatively easy (as it's still pretty dumb). Kryllith
Sithmaster_821
Correction to Kryllith's Q4: In Hardest setting the computer has more resources than you, but that's the only type of "cheating" the ai does. The question thread has a lot on the ai, plus other questions about the game, so i suggest you check it out.

Sithmaster_821
You're welcome! Remember, if you ever have any questions once you get the game, you can post them on the question thread
Admiral Vostok
Gee Sithmaster, always plugging your question thread. Anyway I'd like to say the Computer AI still isn't great. In a hard game with me and my friend vs six comps allied into three teams of two, there was a Confed guy who didn't only got to Tech Level 3, built 2 Troopers and that was it. And he wasn't mining for his ally, he wasn't getting pounded by another comp, he just sucked. It was bad. And Windu I just lost whatever respect I had for you finding out you're a Star Trek fan (partially joking) ... its a wonder you don't enjoy the EU, it's basically Star Wars turned into Star Trek. Oh and welcome SmellinCoffee. If you like SWGB and wonder what a sequel might be like, check out the "Basic model for SWGB2". Its a great thread.
